Los Angeles is at risk of mudslides

The Los Angeles Region During a Super-Breakout by the Santa Ana Winds and Wildfires, as Forecasted by the U.S. Forest Service

Matt Shameson, a meteorologist with the U.S. Forest Service, said that the storm would be beneficial for a couple weeks. “If we get another one or two decent systems, that will help us out significantly.”

The heavier rains that could come at three quarters of an hour could cause debris flows in the afternoon on Sunday and Monday. The Weather Service stated that there is a chance of damaging winds, small hail, and water spouts off of the ocean.

The first drops of rain were expected by the evening, with showers increasing Sunday into Monday in Los Angeles County. Downtown Los Angeles is expected to get an inch of rain in the storm.

The risk of flash floods and mud slides in areas of Los Angeles County devastated by wildfires, including the northwest (Hughes fire), east (Bridge fire), southwest (Franklin and Paliska fires) and especially the central area, depends on the amount of rain that falls.

“What we’re telling people is to avoid the area during the watch period,” Ms. Lund said. If residents decide to stay, it is important to have supplies on hand, because road access could be disrupted.

Kristan Lund, a meteorologist with the Weather Service, called flooding the worst-case scenario for the conditions in Los Angeles, where there is up to a 20 percent chance that debris flows could damage roads and structures.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for the area on Sunday and Monday.

The system was expected to deliver light to moderate rain that would fall intermittently throughout the weekend. The withered vegetation and arid landscape will be given a muchneeded soaking by the weather.

The Santa Ana winds that have caused a lot of problems in Southern California have stopped blowing, as a cold storm is on the way and a long period of rain is about to end.

Los Angeles County Commissioner Karen Bass announced an emergency executive order to warn residents to prepare for wildfires in the next few weeks and a warning warning to evacuate in burned areas

Officials also advise those in wildfire areas to monitor the air quality going forward, and wear an N95 mask whenever there is smoke, dust and ash in the air.

Residents in burned areas who have been cleared by local authorities to return home should take “precautions to protect your health and safety,” Los Angeles County officials said.

“Heavy metals, like lead and arsenic, that come from burned electronics and materials can potentially cause skin irritations and lead to serious illnesses if you’re not careful,” she said.

The director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said last week that there are harmful substances in fire debris and ash.

There are several safety and health risks from damage from wildfires according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Palisade Fire, the Hughes Fire and the Eaton Fire have been brought under control, with Palisade Fire accounting for 87% of the total, according to a Sunday morning estimate by the California Department of Fire Protection.

“With rain in the forecast, it’s imperative we take aggressive action to prevent additional damage in burn areas and to protect our water and ocean from hazardous runoff,” Bass said in a statement.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also signed an emergency executive order early last week directing city crews to “install reinforced concrete barriers, lay down sandbags and clear debris to shore up burn areas and stem the flow of toxins.”

Fast-moving mud, debris and rocks “can pose serious dangers to roads and homes,” the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said, adding that residents should “stay prepared and alert!.” The department cautions those in areas impacted by the fires to be ready to evacuate to higher ground and have an emergency plan. People should avoid driving through areas with debris and flooding.
