America needs more Jimmy Carters

The Carter Legacy: Reflections on the Israel-Palestine Conflict and America’s First Vice President, Lyndon Johnson, and Martin Luther King Jr

Carter faced obstacles in building a strong political coalition, but he was a maverick and was successful at communicating with voters who were disaffected by politics. Post-presidency, Carter remade his image as a key voice for diplomacy and negotiation.

Carter wrote a piece after the White House about his thoughts on the Israel-Palestine conflict, along with offering an assessment of solutions for peace going forward.

Mr. Carter came to the presidency owing little to anyone, including his own party. When he defeated Gerald Ford in the 1976 election, most people thought he was crazy, except for himself and his wife.

At that point, he could not have run at a better time. The previous decade had been brutal for the United States. Lyndon Johnson did not want another term because he was angry with the war in Vietnam. Another, Richard Nixon, resigned to avoid impeachment. Assassinations claimed the lives of yet another Kennedy, Bobby, as well as the nation’s premier civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. The war ended in failure.

Faith in the Carter Era: My Memoir and the Road to Heaven, My Father, and My Son – Jimmy Carter: The White House Years

Published in 2005, Carter offers a defense of the separation of church and state, as well as his takes on contemporary issues such as women’s rights, abortion, terrorism, and the death penalty.

During the Great Depression, Carter’s upbringing was portrayed in his memoir. He reflects on living in a sharecropping economy, and paints a picture of his community and family.

Carter published a book called Why Not the Best? in 1975. Since then, he’s written more than 30 works. Jimmy Carter was America’s most protean author according to a statement issued in February. He kept a voice of great integrity and intellectual honesty in his books.

Authored by Carter’s chief domestic policy adviser, President Carter: The White House Years provides an in-depth look at the Carter administration. The account draws on more than 5,000 pages of notes from meetings, as well as 350 interviews of major players of the time.

Carter’s life has always been based on religion. But his book Faith: A Journey For All is about much more than that. In it, Carter explores faith’s broader meanings, the different ways that it sustains our lives, and how to find faith even in the darkest of times.
