The sixth-gen iPad Mini was the most recent update for the small, dainty iPad. It got a slightly bigger display, USB-C, and second-gen Apple Pencil support, among other key changes. This year’s upgrade feels a little tamer in comparison. The highlight is the addition of Apple’s A17 Pro chip, giving the tablet plenty of processing headroom and an upgraded neural engine for Apple Intelligence, which will come to the iPad Mini as part of iPadOS 18.1 when Apple finally launches it later this month.

The only real design change with the new Mini is the colors. The Mini is one of the new products that Apple has put out this year, with purple and blue models. The new colors on the iPhone 16 will not be eye-catching in photos because they look subdued.

The Mini has always been something of a mystery in the lineup of tablets because it has fans who tend to prefer the smaller size but Apple intimated that there are not that many of those fans. Yes, pilots love their iPad Minis, but it seems clear that most people prefer the big screen to the small one.

The seventh-generation iPad Mini comes with an A17 Pro chip to support Apple Intelligence. It also newly supports the Apple Pencil Pro and has faster Wi-Fi and USB-C speeds.

The more significant changes are inside. The A17 Pro is the same as the A15 in theiPhone 15 Pro, which was upgraded to include a new dual-core processor. The company claims a 30 percent boost inCPU performance with a six-core processor while the five-core card offers a 25% leap compared to the previous model. The neural engine is twice as fast.

The last update of Apple’s smallest device was three years ago. The company didn’t have a live event or pretaped event, they just announced the new tablet through their newsroom. Is the headline about this device? Apple Intelligence. The artificial intelligence features that are expected to arrive this month in Apple’s mobile operating system for the iPhone 16 are still missing from the device.
