How to watch the debate between the two vice presidents

The CBS Evening News Blue Wall Debate: Two Presidential Candidates in the House of Representatives and the Senate Minority Causal Electorate

This will be the only time the candidates meet on stage and simultaneously present their policy positions to the broader American public, which may be less familiar with them than with their partners on the presidential ticket.

The two hold similar roles in their respective campaigns: to appeal to working-class voters in the “Blue Wall” states of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.

CBS Evening News anchor and managing editor Norah O’Donnell and Face the Nation moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate at the CBS Broadcast Center. The debate will air live on CBS, CBS News Streaming Network and Paramount+ and stream live without a cable login on CBSNews.com.

Follow NPR’s live blog on Tuesday for the latest updates, analysis, fact-checking and color — and also watch the CBS News Vice Presidential Debate Simulcast. And you can listen to NPR’s special debate coverage on many public radio stations and in the NPR app.

The author of Hillbilly Elegy blamed Biden and the Democrats for the problems of the rural economy that he grew up in. In the Senate, Vance has positioned himself against Republican leadership at times but on issues like abortion, immigration and election integrity, he’s closely aligned with Trump.

The State Senate Race for the O State Senate: The First Four-Fifth Governor of the Ohio State (and the First Vice-Governor)

The nickname “Coach Walz” was given to Walz by his former football coach and teacher. There are a lot of progressive wins that the governor of that state secured, such as clean energy mandates, universal free school meals and family and medical leave benefits.

Since his nomination, Vance has had to address controversies that are likely to come up again during the debate, including couch-related jokes and criticisms of him calling prominent Democrats “childless cat ladies.” The false claim that Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Ohio has come under fire.

Walz, a two-term governor, has also faced questions about his response to riots in Minneapolis following the 2020 murder of George Floyd and widespread fraud during COVID-19 under a federal program intended to provide food assistance to students after schools closed. Audits have suggested lapses in oversight by the state Department of Education.

This year there will not be an audience for the presidential debates. The candidates will be introduced but no opening statements will be made. Vance won a coin toss and chose to go second with his two-minute closing statement.

After 20 years of service in the National Guard, Walz was redeployed to Italy in 2003 for the war. Vance, who served in the Marines and did a six-month deployment to Iraq, also has not seen combat.

An Election Nightmare in Vance: Tech Issues in the Office of the Minority Causal Counsel and Education Commissioner Lina Khan

Candidates will each speak behind podiums, without an audience in attendance. Candidates have only two minutes to make their closing statements. Vance won a virtual coin toss on Sept. 26 and elected to go second with his closing statement.

One thing that’s different from the presidential debates this year is that neither candidate’s microphone will be muted by default when the other nominee is speaking, but CBS reserves the right to shut the mics down.

The candidates will get 2 minutes to answer each question, 2 minutes to provide responses and 1 minute for rebuttals. Moderators can choose to grant an additional minute to continue a topic. The candidates won’t have a heads-up on questions and aren’t allowed to bring prewritten notes.

The former school teacher and the Hillbilly Elegy author have each taken some significant stances on tech. After companies threatened to leave the state, he vetoed a bill that raised minimum pay for drivers, then signed a different bill that raised the pay by an estimated 20 percent.

Vance has ruffled feathers in his own party with his stance on tech competition regulation. The former venture capitalist and Peter Thiel protégé has praised Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan as “one of the few people in the Biden administration that I actually think is doing a pretty good job,” even though her progressive enforcement and rulemaking on tech is often the subject of critical Wall Street Journal op-eds and corporate pushback.

Tuesday’s debate will likely focus more on some of the key issues in this election, including immigration policy, reproductive healthcare, and the economy, but we’ll be listening in for any hints at how a Trump or Harris administration would impact tech.

The Real Time CBS Fact-Checking Page: CNN’s Way Out of the CP Violation Regime in the U.S. Senate

Rather than have the moderators jump in to fact-check in real time, CBS plans to display a QR code on the screen for viewers watching its channel, directing them to a live fact-checking page.

Going into Tuesday’s debate, former president Donald Trump and vice president Kamala Harris are neck and neck in the polls. The average of national polls by the New York Times showed Harris with three points, but neither candidate had a lead in any of the battleground states.
