Finale of the Basketball World Cup in Beijing: Joel Embiid’s final game against the U.S. Olympic host, France, celebrates his 20th birthday
It was the title game between powerhouse and Olympic host and it drew a lot of celebrities to the stands. U.S. Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach, NBA commissioner Adam Silver, former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Scottie Pippen, the French swimming star Léon Marchand, the retired U.S. soccer star Megan Rapinoe, the five-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird and TV host Jimmy Fallon.
Since 1992, when the Olympics first allowed active professional players to participate, the U.S. has won a gold medal in every Olympics except 2004, when Argentina won gold and the U.S. settled for bronze.
The French crowd was so loud that they cheered “Allez les bleus”, which means “allez France”, and jeered NBA All-Star Joel Embiid when he turned down a place on the French national team. They booed every time the player touched the ball.
Victor Wembanyama, a 20-year-old phenomenon, and a half-dozen other current and former NBA players were included in France’s opponent in the final. France fought until the end, refusing to give up on the U.S.
Curry hit nine three-point baskets in that game and it was the difference. On Saturday, he helped to seal the win with four long balls in the final three minutes. Four of the 10 US players scored in double digits. Curry ended with 24 points.
Serbia won the bronze medal in Thursday’s semifinal game against Team USA, which marked the biggest test yet for the streak. With three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic at the helm, Serbia led from midway through the first quarter until less than three minutes remained in the game.

There was tears coming down my face as soon as the anthem started and I was on the podium. I didn’t think I’d be here, like I said before, representing my country and winning a gold medal. I was fortunate to win a gold medal and it will hold a special place in my heart.

United States women’s basketball coach Cheryl Reeve said that they had a hard time figuring out how to play and score. Both of the best defensive teams in the tournament were us. It was ugly, but it was ugly for a reason. We both made it hard for each other.”
The U.S. was unable to generate much offense in the first half as they faced a very physical French defense. After France briefly took the lead in the first half, the United States was able to come back and tie it before the break.
It was a bit unattractive. We did that and we go home with this gold because nobody cared what it was, we just wanted to come out on top.
