The US women’s soccer team won their fifth gold medal at the Paris Olympics
The Olympic Women’s Water Polo Team lost to the Netherlands 11-10 in the First Final of the 2000 World Cup Final – the U.S. didn’t win it
The U.S. won every game at these Olympics and never trailed. There were some close contests. The Americans played back-to-back overtime games to beat Japan and Germany in the knockout rounds.
A new coach and a new roster have brought this title to the fore. The team has been improved by a trio of young players.
At 26 years old, Swanson is the eldest of the powerhouse trio of Americans. She was a substitute on the 2019 team that won the Women’s World Cup in France, but she did not make the Olympic team in 2021. She tore her left patella tendon months before the World Cup and needed a long recovery.
The game was going to be the last for Brazil’s star player Marta before she moves on to her home country. She stated that it was time to pass the team over to the next generation.
The women’s water polo team won the Olympic gold medal in 2000 but were unable to repeat that feat on Saturday as they lost to the Netherlands 11-10.
They did everything they could, according to coach Adam Krikorian. All you can do is try to live up to your fullest potential in the moment, and then you have to live with the result.
The U.S. team led at halftime, 7-3. But the Netherlands outscored the Americans 5-1 in the final quarter of the match, and Sabrina Vander Sloot scored the game-winning goal with just one second remaining on the clock.
The team came out great, started the game off nicely, but didn’t finish the job. The credit goes to Holland for sticking it out the entire way. It just shows the importance of staying in the moment, and we weren’t able to capitalize on that today.”
The loss is the result of the team losing to Australia in the sixth round of a penalty shoot out. Outside of the pool, the US was grappling with personal adversity.
In a post on the team’s website, captainMaggiestens shared that her sister-in-law, who was in Paris to cheer on the team, had died in a medical emergency.
“We didn’t get the gold medal, we didn’t get the bronze medal today, but I’m proud of the way that I was able to show up for him,” she said. I hope he is proud of the way that I played.
