The two of them worked together to bring in progressive policy wins at the Capitol.
In his first term, Walz faced a divided government — a Democrat-led House and GOP-led Senate. He worked with lawmakers in 2019 to pass a budget with wins for both sides — boosted spending for schools and a tax cut.
The compromises worked well for the state of Minnesota. He eventually agreed to the tax cuts that I was pushing, and I was able to increase education funding levels higher than I thought we should.
Schools must be emptied to stop the spread of the virus. Later, he ordered restaurants and houses of worship shut their doors and Minnesotans stay home and required that face masks be worn in public places.
The limitations that were initially meant to be brief were expanded and some became annoyed with their limitations and authority.

Tim Walz Taps George Floyd During the May 2020 Minnesota City Reaction: Probing the State, Protecting Children and Protecting Families
Minnesota faced another crisis in May of 2020. In an incident screened around the world, Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck as he asked for help. Floyd’s death was the catalyst for protests and riots around the city.
Walz called in thousands of National Guard soldiers and state troopers to police the Twin Cities, but not quickly enough to prevent the burning of a police precinct and looting of several businesses.
“We cannot have the looting and the recklessness that went on, we cannot have it because we can’t function as a society and I refuse to have it take away the attention of the state that we need to be working on,” Walz told reporters days into the riots.
They disagreed about who should take charge. Gazelka, the former Senate majority leader, said the governor acted too late.
I felt like he was frozen, Gazelka said. “And that delayed getting the National Guard out three days beyond what Mayor Frey had requested. And that’s just unacceptable to not be able to handle the crisis in a way that I think it should have been handled.”
The timing of the National Guard call-up is part of the presidential race already with Trump taking credit for the soldiers being sent in after his administration had conversations with the Walz administration.
In their first year with a government trifecta, Democrats checked off every item on their wish list: free breakfast and lunch for students, legal protections for abortion and those seeking gender-affirming care, new clean energy mandates for utility companies, restrictions on guns, legalized marijuana, restoration of voter rights to the formerly incarcerated and paid family and medical leave benefits for workers.

The Adventures of William H. Specht and the Activist Candidate Jeremiah Walz, D-Minn.: A Conversation with William Walz
The president of the largest teachers’ union in the state said that Walz has kept up with his teaching roots while in office.
“He’s been a great governor to work with, you know, his record for investing in public education. Everything he has done to improve working lives for working families. Specht said that. “He has a great track record that I think would resonate across this country.”
The governor launched his national profile with his policy wins. He was co-chair of the Rules Committee at the Democratic National Convention.
What a monster. Kids are eating, eating and having full bellies so they can go learn and women are making their own health care decisions, according to the congressman. “So if that’s where they want to label me, I’m more than happy to take the label.”
“This individual says, ‘You’re not going to be allowed to enter, you’ve been deemed a threat,’” Walz told Minnesota Public Radio years after the exchange with a security guard. I was a bit frustrated and realized how it felt to be looked at right through.
The group of students were taken to the campaign rally by Walz to show their support for Bush. Walz said they were asked to leave because some were wearing stickers supporting Bush’s opponent, John Kerry.
He earned a degree from Chadron State College in Nebraska in 1989 and then spent a year teaching in China with a Harvard University exchange program. He met his wife, Gwen, while teaching. The pair moved to Minnesota in 1996 and taught at a high school in Mankato, Minn. Walz also spent time coaching football and was an assistant on a state title winning team.
A child raised in rural Nebraska, Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard at the age of 17. He frequently points to his upbringing in a small community, noting that several of his cousins were classmates.
The second term Minnesota governor got a spot on the Democratic ticket as a VP choice, according to two sources close to the campaign.
As a result of the decision of Biden to end his reelection campaign, Democrats have rallied around Harris. With Harris as the party’s new leader, Democrats have seen renewed enthusiasm at rallies and with donors. The Harris campaign said the VP and her running mate would tour battleground states starting today in Philadelphia and ending Saturday in Las Vegas.
A Conversation with a Former High School Football Coach: When Dealing with White People Is Not What It Takes to Win: The Case of JD
He likes one-liners and dad jokes that poke fun at his political rivals. He often recycles them. He often sports a plain T-shirt and ball cap instead of a suit, and looks frumpy in the process. He is a former high school football coach and talks fast, which makes him trip over words and leads to some confusing run-on sentences.
But the 60-year-old governor could also face questions about his response to riots in Minneapolis following the 2020 murder of George Floyd and widespread fraud during COVID-19 under a federal program intended to feed kids. The Department of Education has been implicated in the audits.
The Democratic Party has an problem with certain types of people. It began before Trump when Republicans called them Limousine Liberals. But it’s become more acute in the age of Trump. Democrats haven’t been able to connect with the working-class white voters the way the party did decades ago. He gave a plan for how to talk to them as well as saying the same words as others, but in a more authentic way.
The former high school geography teacher and National Guard veteran, who helped green light a slate of progressive policy priorities in Minnesota, could help win over voters in Midwestern swing states.
“Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires and then wrote a best seller trashing that community. Come on. Middle America isn’t what that is. I have to tell you that. I am ready to debate the guy. If he is willing to get off the couch and show up.
He talked about what it’s like growing up in a rural community, how neighbors treat each other, about valuing compromise while not compromising his values, he said.
Kamala Harris: A Keynote Address to the Minnesota Black and Minority Causality Dialogue in Tim Walz’s Introduction to the National Stage
He probably went after both of them, but the vice president is supposed to bring balance and make the top of the ticket look better. Walz certainly did that. He said, for example, Harris brings “joy,” but he’s the one known for being joyful. He is giving her something that he doesn’t own.
“Some of us are old enough to remember when it was Republicans who were talking about freedom. It turns out now what they meant was that the government should be free to invade your doctor’s office. In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and their personal choices that they make. There is a golden rule, even if we don’t make the same choice for ourselves. ”
I can see you down there. He jokingly pointed out others in the front rows before delivering a pretty progressive message.
He is a white guy. Part of Harris’ job is to testify to groups that might be skeptical about the person at the top of the ticket. That might be ideological or — when there hasn’t been a woman as president, let alone a Black or South Asian woman in the office — it might be the white guy’s job to reassure other white guys.
Walz wasn’t from San Francisco, but he Ain’t: The Elephant in the Room is a Real Problem for Harris-Walz
Walz ain’t from San Francisco. On Tuesday night, he made that clear. He made an off-the-cuff comment regarding the elephant in the room.
Harris didn’t know the governor and former congressman before the process. But his speech with Harris in Philadelphia Tuesday introducing the Harris-Walz ticket to the country made his appeal clear.
He’s the guy who coined “weird” as an attack line against former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, but he didn’t dwell on that in the speech.
