The Australia-Canadian superstars who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs participated in the 4-by-200 meter freestyle and individual medley events at the Paris Olympics

The Chinese athletes who tested positive for performance enhancing drugs shared the bronze medal in the women’s 4-by-200 meter freestyle relay.

Chinese swimmers denied wrongdoing during the press conferences after their races, when asked if they were being unfairly scrutinized.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has acknowledged keeping the results of positive drug tests secret, sparking a scandal that now includes a criminal probe by the U.S. Justice Department.

Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh won her second gold medal in four days by swimming the 200 meter butterfly final. American Regan Smith took silver.

The American swimmers won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics on Thursday as young athletes from Australia and Canada powered ahead in key races.

The most stunning moment of the night came at the end, when an Australian team led by star Ariarne Titmus dominated the U.S. in the 4-by-200 meter relay.

“We’re proud of ourselves and proud of what we’ve accomplished,” said the woman who won the gold medal. “We don’t listen to all the outside noise, we kind of stick together.”

The US swimmers were confident after posting blazing fast times and posting new records at the national trials.

Leon Marchand, who trains in the U.S., won his fourth gold medal at these Summer Games on Friday night before a roaring crowd.

Dressel’s not alone. Many star athletes have struggled during the Olympics, while some posted personal best times and still weren’t good enough to beat other countries.

Katie Ledecky also dominated the women’s 1500 meter freestyle final, her signature event, and achieved a new milestone with 13 total medals — including gold, silver and bronze.

The gold medal winner in the 800-meter freestyle in the Tokyo Games three years ago, Finke was the reigning gold medal winner in the event at the Paris Olympics.

Carson Foster, another American considered a strong medal contender in Paris, finished in fourth place Friday, out of medal contention in the men’s 200-meter individual medley, an event combining freestyle, back, breaststroke and butterfly.

Swimming with Caeleb Dressel: “It’s been tough, I can’t do that,” he told reporters on Friday night at La Defense

Both Dressel and Smith said that they prioritized mental health and the enjoyment of sport over winning a gold medal. Dressel took eight months away from the sport in 2022.

Asked if she was disappointed by the lack of a gold medal finish, Smith said, “I have absolutely no control over what my competitors are doing. I think that was a damn good swim on my part.”

Regan Smith was the lone American to medal on Friday. She finished a half-second behind Australia’s Kaylee McKeown in the women’s 200-meter backstroke final, picking up a silver medal for the U.S.

The race was not Dressel’s best work. “Hasn’t been my best week, I don’t need to shy away from that. Yeah, it’s tough, a little heartbreaking.”

NANTERRE, France — When Caeleb Dressel sliced into the water Friday night at La Defense arena, he carried the mantle of America’s long-dominant swimming program.
