The Canadian Olympic women’s soccer team landed in hot water this week after the New Zealand team spotted a Drones over their practice. The report of the incident was reported to French authorities, and they found the operator to be an unaccredited member of the Canadian squad. Lombardi and assistant coach Jasmine Mander were subsequently sent home, while head coach Bev Priestman voluntarily withdrew from the opening match against New Zealand. Priestman has been removed from the Games completely.

The head coach of the Canadian team said on the eve of the game she would not play because she had been reprimanded by the Canadian Olympic Committee for flying an illegal drone and firing two employees.

The COC identified the two staffers removed as Joseph Lombardi, an analyst with the team, and Jasmine Mander, an assistant coach. The COC reportedly confirmed that it was Lombardi who flew the drone over the New Zealand trainings.

The New Zealand soccer team had been practicing in the Auguste Dury stadium, when a supervisor at the Olympic training sites in Saint-Etienne said there was a drone in the sky.

On two separate occasions, he “had effectively filmed the closed-door training of the New Zealand women’s team, with the help of a drone,” the statement read.

During questioning, he admitted to taking pictures of the New Zealand players during their training in Saint-Etienne, but the footage taken on July 22 shows the players wearing their gear for the first time.

The prosecutor’s office also questioned the assistant trainer from the Canadian team, whom the drone pilot had told about his visit to the New Zealand team’s training site. She had no knowledge of the acts and was exonerated, the office said.

The maximum prison sentence for maintaining an aircraft over a forbidden area is one year and a fine of 50,000 euros, whichever is greater.

Accompanied by a lawyer, the prosecutor’s statement read, the man accepted a sentence of 8 months in prison, as well as the confiscation of his drone and other electronic equipment seized from his hotel room.

Canada Soccer will conduct an external review of the incident, and the sport’s international governing body has launchedDisciplinary proceedings.

It would’ve been a big enough scandal had this been a one-off, but TSN’s report cites sources close to the matter saying the team used the same tactics during the women’s team’s gold medal run at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and a Women’s World Cup qualifier game against Panama in 2022. The US men’s national team filmed their practice sessions in preparation for their World Cup match against Honduras.
