What is the stance on Israel taken by Harris?
When President Biden was shot and he was killed, Kathleen Madonna-Emmerling, fought to keep the sandwich big for the kids and for the future
Kathleen Madonna-Emmerling smiled as the server at the local sandwich shop made her a sandwich that was three times bigger than a double AA battery.
Locals like Madonna-Emmerling say that the Pittsburgh-style sandwich was made for blue collar workers to eat with one hand while on a shift.
When there were talks of closing a local school, she protested. She is the president of the library board and she fought to keep the book on the shelves. She has run for public office and trained activists to knock on doors to get people to vote for Democrats.
But selling locals on President Biden at the top of the ticket has proven a struggle. His poor showing at the debate with Donald Trump has caused a lot of energy to be zapped. There was a lot of whiplash in this area due to the attempted assassination on Trump in nearby Butler, because many voters in this area do not always stick to one party or the other.
“People are a little bit checked out. People are very tired. And we’re just trying to say, ‘OK , you’re going to be tired about the top of the ticket, but there’s still work to do,’” Madonna-Emmerling said, noting that some door-knocking efforts were slowed down after the shooting out of respect for Republican voters.
The State of Biden’s Democratic Party: Seven Years after his Reelection Run (after his reelection run in May 2020)
President Biden spoke in the Oval Office last night about his decision to withdraw from the reelection race. He also laid out plans for the next six months of his presidency. Biden said he didn’t want to abandon the race, but the stakes were too high. There are four things he said in his speech.
Moon Township has 13 voting precincts that Trump won most when he was in the state. Democrats and Joe Biden gained support in the town when over 2000 people voted in the 2020 elections. The Democrats won the swing state back with the help of the same thing happening in small counties across the state.
With the vice president now running, a new NPR survey found that the presidential race has hit a bit of a reset. Trump and Harris are now statistically tied, and some independent voters now say they are undecided,
In the upcoming election, Harris faces the fundamental challenge of holding together the broad coalition that Biden won in 2020. The problem: They have very different views on some issues. Her time as a prosecutor in the state of California is under scrutiny. Here’s what one Democrat and one Republican in Pittsburgh have to say about the issue.
There is more work to be done with voters in the suburbs and also with people who may now be undecided after Biden endorsed Harris.
“Often in the suburbs, people want someone who is pro-public safety, pro-police,” Madonna-Emmerling said, adding that many in the area have family who are former military now working in law enforcement. “That can be a really hard barrier to overcome sometimes. And when you can say this is a clear case of a prosecutor against a felon, it’s a home run.”
Moon Township Tax Collector John Wink: The Effects of the Inflationary Season on the Local Economy and the U.S.-Mexico Border
The elected Republican tax collector of Moon Township, John Wink, speaking to NPR from his backyard, claimed that the luster of Harris taking Biden at the top of the ticket will wear off in the coming weeks.
The core issues that Wink said he feels matter most to voters in this part of Pennsylvania – how they are currently experiencing inflation and securing the U.S.-Mexico border – still favor Trump.
The GOP’s state committee is chaired by Wink who has resided in the Pittsburgh area since he was two years old. His father was once in charge of a township north of the city. Wink said he started working on campaigns, stuffing envelopes and putting mailers together for candidates, as early as 15 years old.
He feels that the residents and voters of the town are happy with how the town is being run, no matter which side of the political spectrum you’re on. The police force is doing well, he said.
It’s Pennsylvania’s status as a swing state, closely watched by national politics, that makes living here interesting from a political perspective, Wink said.
“I kind of thought Trump was in trouble in 2020 because I was seeing too many Biden signs, much more so than in 2016, where there were very little in the way of Hillary signs,” Wink remembered.
He would’ve liked to see Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis or former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley be the nominee. After Trump won the primaries, he’s going to vote for him.
If she becomes the nominee as expected, Wink and Madonna-Emmerling have a similar view on whether Moon Township will vote for Trump or Harris.
The cost of groceries and other living expenses are a hardship for people on fixed incomes. If Republicans can convey that message and get the lower-propensity voters to turn out, the election will be theirs.
She says that people in this community work hard for their families and are caring for each other. Those who are non-voters could be inspired to head to the polls if they spoke authentically.
How Did Tweens Get Their Electronic Devices Before Bedtime? Takeaways from Biden’s Oval Office Address: The Israel Prime Minister’s Visit to Congress
Tweens might not be getting enough sleep due to how they use their electronic devices before bedtime. Scientists looked at nearly 9,400 11- and 12-year-olds for the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study, a long-term study of brain development and child health in the U.S. Researchers asked tweens and their parents detailed questions about how they used screens around bedtime and how well they slept. A follow-up was done a year later. There are ways in which parents can help their kids have better sleep.
The annual Tiny Desk Contest received more than 7,000 entries this year. There wasn’t any shortage of talent even though there was only one winner. NPR Music’s Bobby Carter, who has produced Tiny Desks for some legendary hip-hop artists such as Mac Miller and Noname, breaks down some of his favorite entries. Carter talks about how hip-hop acts stepped up their submissions this year and the versatility of the entries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his administration’s war effort in his first speech to Congress since the Hamas attacks. He urged the congress to fast-track military aid for Israel and promised that the U.S. would do everything it could to defeat Hamas. Dozens of Democratic lawmakers boycotted the speech, and thousands of protesters marched outside the Capitol. Biden and Harris will meet with Netanyahu on the same day. The Israeli prime minister’s visit comes at a crucial time in American politics, as Harris looks to strike a delicate balance on Israel ahead of the 2024 election.
