OpenAI: How Searchgt Impacted Google, Bing, and Other Search Engines in the 2022 – 2022 Era
OpenAI is announcing its much-anticipated entry into the search market, SearchGPT, an AI-powered search engine with real-time access to information across the internet.
In another instance, it shows how to plant tomatoes before breaking them down. Click the sidebar to open other relevant links after the results appear. There is also a feature called “visual answers” but OpenAI did not tell us how this works before publishing.
Publishers will be able to control how they appear in Openai search features. They can opt out of having their content used to train OpenAI’s models and still be surfaced in search.
The search engine was a prototype so it helped OpenAI in a number of ways. First, if SearchGPT’s results are wildly incorrect — like when Google rolled out AI Overviews and told us to put glue on our pizza — it’s easier to say, well, it’s a prototype! Perplexity was accused of ripping off articles and there’s a chance they’ll be wrong.
This new product has been whispered about for months now, with The Information reporting about its development in February, then Bloomberg reporting more in May. There was a report that OpenAI had been aggressively trying to lure employees of Google to their search team. X users noticed a new website was being worked on, which could be related to the move.
Kayla Wood, a spokesperson for OpenAI, declined to provide a SearchGPT demo or an interview about the new tool for WIRED, but confirmed that the company has already given access to unnamed partners and publishers and improved aspects of the search engine based on their feedback.
After OpenAI first introduced ChatGPT in November 2022, early users saw in the chatbot’s ability to dig up and summarize information from the web a potential replacement for conventional web search. Large language models can be difficult to use, but they are still imperfect search tools. The models draw on training data that is often months or years out of data and when unsure of an answer they will make up facts.
The early efforts with Bing were not a good success with the search engine producing strange, inappropriate, and incorrect answers. Bing’s market share grew only slightly following the overhaul.
There are also questions of potential violations of copyrighted works. Perplexity in particular has been criticized by publications, including WIRED, for copying aspects of original journalism with its AI search tool and seeming to ignore requests not to take content from some websites. The company mentions in its post that it is committed to the publishers and tries to help them by linking to them in searches. Multiple companies, including Vox Media, The Atlantic, News Corp, and The Financial Times, have all signed licensing agreements with OpenAI this year.
