The union of Amazon joins the one of the Teamsters
Amazon Labor Union in Staten Island: A Two-Year War and The Future Is Farther than It Looked (and Now It Has Come)
For two years now, Amazon has refused to recognize the upstart union or begin bargaining with some 5,500 workers it represents in Staten Island, N.Y. The company continues to legally challenge the union’s victory, while the union’s finances and internal cohesion have deteriorated.
The Amazon Labor Union lost both of its elections in New York after its victory in Staten Island. Chris Smalls, the group’s leader who was fired after staging a strike at Amazon, had argued that only a “smurf grassroots and independent effort” could succeed at organizing his warehouse.
JFK8 workers in particular have faced mounting obstacles since its historic vote to unionize in 2022. Amazon quickly objected to the results of the election and has yet to agree to bargain with the ALU, The New York Times reports. The website didn’t reply to a request for comment.
