Mexico’s first female president: a Georgia cancer patient’s Medicaid struggle and the case of a politician sentenced to assassinating Modi
Wilson wanted to be a conductor since she was in middle school. Four years ago, doctors found a cancerous tumor in her brain, threatening her life and dream. She had to choose between forgoing chemotherapy and surgery or getting the life-saving treatment and figuring out how to pay for it later. She chose to have a surgical procedure. Her recovery has been complicated by the fact that she was denied Medicaid, the state-federal program that provides health coverage to low-income people. Georgia’s limit is $30 more than Wilson’s.
Narendra Modi is expected to become the Prime Minister of India tomorrow. The limits of democracy can be found in the case of professors, lawyers and trade unionists who were sentenced to years in jail over an allegation of plot to assassinate Modi. The case involves a computer hacking trail that leads to the Indian government’s use of controversial security software, and the death of an 83-year-old priest.

The Dialogue Between Sheinbaum And López Obrador: A Conversation With Her Political Mentor, Xchitl Glvez
Mexico’s electoral agency estimates that sheinbaum is likely to win the race with between 60 to 60% of the votes. She is expected to get between 27% and 26% of the vote, with Xchitl Glvez getting between 26% and 28% of the vote.
The man she says is her political mentor, outgoing President Lpez Obrador, posted a message on his account.
Sheinbaum is a former mayor of Mexico City who was part of the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change team that would go on to share a Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore in 2007.
He is one of the most divisive — and popular — figures in Mexican history: a folksy populist who has implemented social programs that have lifted millions of people out of poverty but who critics say has undermined democratic institutions while empowering the military.
He said that he will support him to death even though he does not have a lot of life left to live. Morales had a list of reasons. López Obrador has started “marvelous projects” like new train lines and oil refineries; he gives a monthly pension to elderly Mexicans and, most importantly, he takes care of the poor.
She is also López Obrador’s political protege. He was elected mayor of Mexico City in 2000, and she worked as his environmental minister. She has been unwaveringly loyal ever since, even supporting his pro-oil energy agenda despite her environmental background.
Sheinbaum has a reputation for being analytical and disciplined, even though she does not have the same charisma or popularity as Lpez Obrador. Most importantly, she has promised to support López Obrador’s policies and popular social programs, including a universal pension benefit for seniors as well as providing cash payments to low-income residents.
“Claudia represents the continuation of AMLO,” said Norma Bautista Herrera, who sells vegetables at a market in Mexico City. Bautista Herrera began getting money every month to support her daughter, after the election of Lpez Obrador. She buys soap, sugar, eggs, and Clorox when she has that money.
Sheinbaum’s nearest competitor for the presidency was Xóchitl Gálvez. Glancing was associated with several opposition parties, but could not escape the corruption and unhappiness of voters associated with those parties.
Many who cast their vote for Gálvez were more motivated by her promised break from López Obrador and the electoral power of his Morena party than Gálvez’s campaign promises. In a country that saw one-party rule for 70 years until 2000, they worry about Lopez Obrador’s moves to undermine judicial independence and his security policy that has resulted in record high homicides.
Anaya, along with her two daughters, were outside of a polling center in Mexico City, saying that she thinks Sheinbaum is a dictator. She claimed Lpez Obrador wants Mexico to become a communist state like Cuba and Venezuela.
