Ikea has a gaming furniture that resembles furniture and not an energy drink
The Brännboll Collection is For Everyone: An Ikea Product Design for a Living Room Designed for Gaming and Living in a Low Space
The Brännboll collection also includes a “gaming station” that folds away into something resembling a wardrobe, complete with a foldable tabletop, integrated PC tower storage, and cable management. There is also a storage box that doubles as a table, display shelving, and some textile accessories.
Dilé said the range is appropriate for adults and is age-inclusive, unlike Ikea’s press images. There’s no pricing available yet, but we should learn more about the Brännboll collection before its September launch.
Seating is the main focus. There’s an armchair that folds out into a lounging position, a rocking-style chair designed to swing with your body’s movement, and an inflatable donut-style chair with a matching footstool.
Ikea is introducing a new range of gaming furniture that subverts the usual dark, edgy “gamer” aesthetic for designs that are more likely to blend in with your existing home decor.
Gaming, as an activity, has rarely had living spaces designed around it. Instead, it’s latched onto other spaces in the home, adapting to what those rooms were already made for. The living rooms have game consoles placed in them to be comfortable. The stance of a home office is mainly designed to support several hours of work at a computer.
For example, the Gaming Lounge Chair is made of a stack of two square cushions for the seat, with a third forming the back of the seat. The seat is flanked by two arms that are both made of pipe. It sits almost too low on the ground, and the bottom cushions can fold out to get even lower and let your legs stretch out.
It’s an odd design, until you picture yourself slipping into a slumping stance when you’re in a gaming session. As product design developer at Ikea Philip Dilé told WIRED, his team found that wanting lower seating was a common request among gamers. People who are gaming prefer that type of preference. They want to sit low, close to a TV or something like that.
