Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant During the Mid-Wavelength of the Gaza-Lebanon War: Implications for the Joint Security Council and the UN Security Council
A statement from Mikati’s office stated that he requested an urgent complaint against Israel be brought before the UN Security Council.
A soldier was killed and several others were wounded when a rocket hit a military base in the town of Safed on Wednesday. Hezbollah fighter and civilians, including six women and three children, were killed when Israel carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon.
diplomatic efforts by the United States and other countries to de-escalate the cross border tensions were in danger because of the strikes.
Israel’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, said earlier on Thursday that he had spoken to the U.S. defense secretary, Lloyd J. Austin III, about the “ongoing threats and attacks” from Hezbollah. In a post on social media, Mr. Gallant said Israel would ensure its security along the border with Lebanon by “diplomatic or military means.”
That came after remarks from the Israeli military’s chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, who said late Wednesday that his forces were “now focusing on being prepared for war in the north.”
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza, Israel and Hezbollah have traded fire along the border. The group Hezbollah has not claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.
At least 28,576 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. Over 68,000 people have been wounded in the war.
Netanyahu calls the demands “delusional” and says Israel will soon expand its offensive into Gaza’s southernmost city. More than half of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have fled elsewhere in the coastal enclave to seek safety in the nearby city of Rafah.
Hamas has continued to attack Israeli forces in all parts of Gaza, and says it will not release all the remaining captives until Israel ends its offensive and withdraws. Hamas is also demanding the release of a large number of Palestinian prisoners, including top militants.
“If you stay at the hospital, be against the Israeli military’s orders and become a potential target or leave the compound into an apocalyptic landscape, where bombings andevacuation orders are a part of daily life.”
The Israeli military said that it had opened a corridor for displaced people to leave the hospital but would allow doctors and patients to stay. Scores of people walked out of the facility on foot with their stuff on their shoulders.
Dr. Khaled Alserr, one of the remaining surgeons at Nasser Hospital, told the AP that the seven patients hit early Thursday were already being treated for past wounds. A doctor was lightly wounded when the upper stories of the hospital were opened fire on.
Video of the aftermath of the strike showed medics scrambling to wheel patients on stretchers through a corridor filled with smoke or dust. A medic used a flashlight to illuminate a room that was filled with a man who had been shot. The Associated Press could not authenticate the videos but they were consistent with its reporting.
Nasser Hospital, in the southern city of Khan Younis, has been the latest focus of operations that have gutted Gaza’s health sector as it struggles to treat scores of patients wounded in daily bombardments.
Negotiations over a cease-fire in Gaza appear to have stalled, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the offensive until Hamas is destroyed and scores of hostages taken during the Oct. 7 attack that sparked the war are returned.
RAFAH, Gaza Strip — Israeli forces stormed the main hospital in southern Gaza on Thursday, hours after Israeli fire killed a patient and wounded six others inside the complex. The Israeli army said it was a limited operation seeking the remains of hostages taken by Hamas.
According to the military, Hamas may hold hostages at the hospital and that the remains of hostages could still be inside. Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said forces were conducting a “precise and limited” operation there, and wouldn’t forcibly evacuate medics or patients. Israel accuses Hamas of using hospitals and other civilian structures to shield its fighters.
The raid came a day after the army sought to evacuate thousands of displaced people who had taken shelter at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. The city has been the focus of Israel’s offensive against Hamas in recent weeks.
