Israel’s bombardment of the Gaza strip has so far killed more than 26,000 people — approximately 1% of the prewar population — according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Israel’s offensive is in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 240 taken hostage, according to Israeli officials.
Hassim accused Israel of committinggenocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza. This included what she called the “mass” and indiscriminate killing of Palestinian civilians, food blockades and the wholesale destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system and infrastructure.
As a result, she said, more than 1,800 families in Gaza have lost multiple family members, and 85% of all Palestinians in Gaza have been forced to flee their homes.

The South African legal team argued that genocidal intent is shown by the way in which Israel conducted its campaign in Gaza, as well as by the comments made by Israeli officials and leaders.

Israel’s ground offensive has intensified in southern Gaza, where more than a million people have fled seeking safety.
The White House is sending William J. Burns, the C.I.A. director, to Europe to meet with senior officials from Israel, Egypt and Qatar in an effort to advance negotiations over the release of hostages held in Gaza and a longer cease-fire. US officials who spoke to Mr. Burns said that Israel appears willing to agree on a longer pause in fighting in return for more hostage releases.
Some people were criticized for not ordering a halt to the war, while the Palestinian Foreign Ministry stated that the court had ruled in favor of humanity and international law.
