The U.S. and the UK attacked targets in Yemen
The UN Security Council Resolution on the Yemen War and the GALAXY Leader’s Role in the Relations Between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis
Despite the civil war in Yemen, the Saudi-led coalition fighting on behalf of the Yemen’s exiled government have held a cease-fire with the Houthis for months. There are concerns that a wider conflict in the sea or a possible reprisal strike by the Western forces could reignite the tensions in Yemen. Iran has largely avoided directly entering the wider Israel-Hamas war, further into the conflict.
The United States and some other countries have formed a coalition called Prosperity Guardian to provide security for the shipping companies in the Red Sea.
The final draft is weaker, eliminating any U.N. recognition of a country’s right to defend its ships. The right of member states, in accordance with international law, to defend their vessels from attacks is one of the things it would affirm.
The Associated Press obtained a draft resolution before the UN Security Council that says the attacks impede global commerce and undermine regional peace and security. The resolution demanded that the first ship that the Houthis attacked was the Japanese-operated GALAXY Leader, which the rebels seized along with its crew in November.
United States and the Red Sea response to the Yemen War in the midst of the recent U.S.-Jewish attack on the Houthi militants
The Red Sea is used to carry goods and people between the Middle East and Asia and Europe. The strait is only 18 miles wide at its narrowest point, limiting traffic to two channels for inbound and outbound shipments, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. It is the location of nearly 10% of oil traded at sea and an estimated $1 trillion of goods passed through it annually.
The fighting between Israel and Hamas has caused an Israeli air-and-ground offensive to target the Gaza Strip. However, the links to the ships targeted in the rebel assaults have grown more tenuous as the attacks continue.
“The U.K. alongside allies have previously made clear that these illegal attacks are completely unacceptable and if continued the Houthis will bear the consequences,” Shapps said in a statement. The action needed to protect innocent lives and the global economy will be taken.
The British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that the assault was the largest attack by the Iranian-backed rebels in the Red Sea.
It said 18 drones, two cruise missiles and the anti-ship missile were downed by F-18s from the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, as well as by American Arleigh Burke-class destroyers the USS Gravely, the USS Laboon and the USS Mason, as well as the United Kingdom’s HMS Diamond.
The United States and the U.K. launched strikes on multiple Houthi militant targets in Yemen, according to a U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity. The strikes follow more than two months of attacks by the Houthis against international cargo ships and U.S. warships in the Red Sea, expanding a Middle East conflict U.S. officials have worked hard to contain.
Off Mokha, ships saw missiles fired, a drone in the air and small vessels trailing them, Ambrey said early Wednesday. The British military acknowledged the incident off Hodeida.
With the latest U.S. attack on Yemen, what will it mean for Iranian-proxies in the region? Will they increase their attacks on shipping or U.S. troops? Will Iran get more involved? Iran has sent a ship to the Red Sea.
The United States, meanwhile, killed a senior Iranian-affiliated militia leader in Baghdad, Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi, also known as Abu Taqwa, who the U.S. says was behind attacks on its forces in the country. The attack incensed some Iraqi leaders who said the killing violated its sovereignty and raised questions about ongoing U.S. presence.
The War on the Gaza Strip, and the Security Risk of the Middle East, the U.S. and the Joint Syria-Iraq War
Israel said that it is meant to destroy Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip. Most of the people who died in Gaza were women and children, according to health officials there.
The conflict was getting worse before the US strikes in Yemen. The Pentagon has recorded at least 120 attacks against US forces in Syria and Iraq since October. Three soldiers were wounded in a recent attack on Irbil, Iraq, one of which is in a critical condition.
A steady stream of U.S. officials — from Secretary of State Antony Blinken to national security adviser Jake Sullivan to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin — have all pressed for a more targeted ground campaign, protection of civilians and an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza.
“The situation is constantly evolving and remains highly volatile, and all available intelligence at hand confirms that the security risk continues to be at a significantly elevated level,” the shipping giant Maersk said in a statement on Jan. 5. “We have therefore decided that all Maersk vessels due to transit the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden will be diverted south around the Cape of Good Hope for the foreseeable future.”
He says that Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Palestinians have similar weapons supplied by Iran, but the Houthis have a far more advanced arsenal.
Some people wonder if the U.S. strikes were to send a message or to launch a larger assault on Iran.
Iran and its proxies are pressing their attacks because they haven’t confronted steel. ” The ability to stop probing depends on swift and violent reactions from the other party.”
The Wall Street Journal reported that a retired Marine general said in an opinion piece that the time had come to act against the Houthis and send a message to Iran.
According to a news release, the global crisis is brought on by weak presidential leadership. The president should allow the commanders the freedom of action to end the terrorist behavior by the Houthis.
Turner, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said on ABC’s This Week that the Biden administration needs to take a tougher stance against the Houthis.
If the attacks on the rebels continued, a senior official in the Biden administration said that the rebels would face consequences, a statement that was telegraphed for days. The official said President Biden met with his national security team on New Year’s Day to discuss options.
The United States and the United Kingdom conducted strikes against a number of targets in Yemen that have been used by the Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation.
