The Pixel 8 Pro will feature the same model as the Android device
Google vs. Gemini: Ready, Go? Benchmarking OpenAI’s GPT-4 versus Google’s Gemini Advanced
Google is starting out quite small with Gemini Nano. Even the Smart Reply feature is only Gemini-powered in WhatsApp, though Google says it’s coming to more apps next year. And Gemini as a whole is only rolling out in English right now, which means many users won’t be able to use it at all. Your Pixel 8 Pro won’t suddenly feel like a massively upgraded device — though it might over time, if Gemini is as good as Google thinks it can be. Next year, when the Bard will be included on the Assistant, you will have even more of the Gemini experience.
Bard is just a chatbot, and you type it back. There is a new version of Bard that is coming soon. The most powerful version of the new largelanguage model will be a preview of Bard Advanced powered by Gemini Ultra. Gemini Ultra is also the multimodal version of the model, meaning it can accept and create images, audio, and video in addition to just text.
Bard is now running Gemini Pro, the middle tier of the Gemini series. Ultra is the biggest and most powerful but it’s slower and less capable than the other two, while Pro is the most capable and small. It is meant to be a fast and efficient version of the model, but still as capable as possible.
The new artificial intelligence project at the company, developed with fast development, was driven by the recent concern about the threat that developments from Openai and others could pose to the company.
So, let’s just get to the important question, shall we? OpenAI’s GPT-4 versus Google’s Gemini: ready, go. This has been a preoccupation of theirs for a while. “We’ve done a very thorough analysis of the systems side by side, and the benchmarking,” Hassabis says. A lot of well-established tests are used to compare the two models, like the Multi-tasking Language Understanding benchmark and one that compares the models ability to generate Python code. “I think we’re substantially ahead on 30 out of 32” of those benchmarks, Hassabis says, with a bit of a smile on his face. “Some of them are very narrow. Some of them are larger.”
Talking to Pichai and Hassabis, it’s clear that they see the Gemini launch both as the beginning of a larger project and as a step change in itself. Gemini is the model Google has been waiting for, the one it has been building toward for years, maybe even the one it should have had ready before OpenAI and ChatGPT took over the world.
Bard is not a search engine, but it’s a tool to manage your Bard access and access information in an AI environment
Hassabis has always spoken about big leaps in artificial intelligence. Most notably, he became famous in 2016 after a bot called AlphaGo taught itself to play the complex and subtle board game Go with superhuman skill and ingenuity.
“Until now, most models have sort of approximated multimodality by training separate modules and then stitching them together,” Hassabis says, in what appeared to be a veiled reference to OpenAI’s technology. It’s okay for some tasks, but you cannot have deep complex reasoning in multimodal space.
At the end of September, Openai launched an upgrade to their chat game, which gave it the ability to take images and audio. OpenAI has not disclosed technical details about how GPT-4 does this or the technical basis of its multimodal capabilities.
Gemini is also only available in English, though Google plans to roll out support for other languages soon. With previous generative AI updates from Google, the European Union does not have this one yet.
Do you have an account with the search engine? Using Gemini inside of Bard is as simple as visiting the website in your browser and logging in. If you don’t want to create an account, you won’t be able to access Bard. A person with a workspace account might need to switch over to a personal email account.
A Guide for Crafting Better Prompts for Gemini Pro in the Bard (with an appendix by Jorda Chandrasekhar Mehta)
So how is the anticipated Gemini Ultra different from the currently available Gemini Pro model? According to Google, Ultra is its “most capable mode” and is designed to handle complex tasks across text, images, audio, video, and code. There is a smaller version of the artificial intelligence model that works as part of the phone’s features, and it’s available on the Pixel 8 Pro.
As you experiment with Gemini Pro in Bard, keep in mind many of the things you likely already know about chatbots, such as their reputation for lying. Are you not sure where to start? We have a guide on crafting better Prompts for the Bard.
