The GOP speaker nomination went to Rep. Steve Scalise
Speaker Timing: The 2016 Louisiana House Minority Whip Steve Scalise Before a Shot Injures His Upper Boundary
Republicans selected Majority Leader Steve Scalise to be their speaker by winning a majority of the votes in a secret ballot election.
The House is in recess from 3 to 4 pm Wednesday. Speaker Pro tempore Patrick McHenry said that he hopes a vote on speaker can be held as soon as today.
The former systems engineer got his start in politics at Louisiana State University, where he was twice elected speaker of LSU’s Student Government Association. He served as a member of Louisiana’s state Legislature for 12 years before being elected to the U.S. House.
The House majority whip, who was also the baseball team player, was shot in Alexandria, Va., in October of 2017) while he was playing second base. The incident led to a long road to recovery: Scalise underwent multiple surgeries and blood transfusions after the bullet that struck his left hip traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding.
In August, Scalise said he was diagnosed with a very treatable blood cancer and had begun treatment. He said on X that he had begun treatment and that it would go on for several months.
Race for Speaker of the House slides into uncertainty, again: a Republican disappointment after victory on Wednesday night in the House of Delegates Michael Scalise
House Republicans once hoped they could quickly select a new Speaker of the House and quell the drama within their ranks, but by Thursday afternoon an easy resolution seemed to be slipping further away.
Scalise can only lose a handful of Republicans if he hopes to secure a majority. It is raising concerns about Republicans’ ability to govern and convince voters that they are the right people for the job next year.
“I think one of the biggest threats we have is in the room where our meetings are taking place,” McCaul told reporters. We can’t unify as a conference with a speaker in the chair.
McCaul warned that Congress will soon need to act to provide more aid to Israel — and they will need a speaker to do that. He also warned that the infighting and instability undermines the U.S. image abroad.
McCarthy told reporters that he was not able to get the support he hoped for despite his win on Wednesday. It is an indication of the susceptibility of the position of the speaker.
Even members who supported Scalise and worked to win votes have openly suggested that the only way forward is to force a vote on the floor and see what happens.

Are We All Over the Map on The Numbers?” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA, and the Democratic Candidate Amy Klobuchar
“We need to know what the numbers are,” Womack said. “People can say one thing, tweet something else. We’re all over the map on this thing.
The comments come after a group of members, including those who voted for the other one, began to speak with reporters about their concerns.
The motivation in opposing him has been made clear by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-GA. Greene is also a close supporter of Jordan and is in frequent contact with former President Trump, who has repeatedly sought to influence the House GOP leadership race.
Trump endorsed McCarthy for the position in January, but he still had to endure 14 rounds of voting before Trump weighed in a final time for McCarthy to get over the finish line in a 15th round.
