The future of the US is uncertain after the Women’s World Cup

First knockout tournament for the U.S. team at the World Cup: A post-game interview with the Fox Sports sports execcceeding

Sweden will take on Japan in the quarterfinals. The U.S., the number one team in the world and two-time defending Women’s World Cup champions, heads home.

“I know we were criticized for the way we played, at different moments [in this tournament],” U.S. Coach Andonovski said in a Fox Sports post-game interview. “I think we came out today and showed what we’re all about. The strength, resilience, fight and bravery are what it takes to survive. Unfortunately, soccer can be cruel sometimes.”

Sweden’s next shot sailed over the crossbar. But then so did the next U.S. kick and then another. U.S. keeper Alyssa Naeher managed a save and then took a penalty shot of her own – keeping the U.S. in it.

The drama began when that happened. Kristie Mewis subbed into the game in the final minute of extra time, making her Women’s World Cup debut. She made the penalty shot.

The U.S. would kick first – Andi Sullivan calmly struck the ball low and to the left just out of Mušović’s reach. Sweden answered to make it 1-1. The US captain gave a kick in to make it 2-1. Sweden evened it to 2-2.

They played like the giants they are in women’s soccer on a cold night. Against number-three Sweden, the top-ranked U.S. had more energy, precision and discipline than in previous matches at this Women’s World Cup.

So despite the U.S. dominance during regulation, neither side scored — which forced a half-hour of extra time. Alex Morgan was taken out of the game in the 99th minute to be replaced by Megan Rapinoe. Both teams had chances in extra time, but failed to score.

This U.S. team appeared disorganized and timid during the World Cup despite its desperation in its last match. The defending champions were in the group stage but had to play against Vietnam, Netherlands and Portugal.

Seven times these two teams faced off at the WWC, it was the most in tournament history. This is the first knockout round match up for them. Going in, the U.S. had a 4W-1D-1L record.

It was a sad day for the United States Women’s National Team. And it came by the narrowest of margins. An inch. Maybe less.

“All we want to do is be successful, be able to uphold the legacy that this team deserves. We failed at that this time,” said forward Alex Morgan, who like Rapinoe was playing in her fourth World Cup. “But I’m still hopeful with the future of this team. I still stand by that. This game is evolving, the game is getting better and that’s not going to change. It’s only going to continue.”

In the end, however, the United States struggled most with its identity. The ’99ers, for example, couldn’t muster the confidence of teams past.

The Future Is Uncertain for the U.S. after Kilcrashing Out of the Women’s World Cup: Catarina Macario

Catarina Macario, who was hailed as the future stars of the team, tore her right knee last year and didn’t recover in time.

In April, the team’s top scorer, Mallory Swanson, tore her injured left knee in a match with Ireland. Sauerbrunn, the captain, had to pull out of the tournament due to a foot injury.

“I know it’s the end and that’s sad, but to know this is really the only time I’ve been in one of these, this early, says so much about how much success I’ve been able to have and just how much I’ve loved playing for this team and playing for this country,” Rapinoe said, tears in her eyes. It’s been a pleasure.

Rapinoe, the outspoken star on the 2019 World Cup known for her iconic victory pose, wasn’t the same game-changer she once was. At 38, and after a pair of World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal, her role had diminished. She announced before the tournament started that it would be her last World Cup.

There was backlash on social media and among pundits following the match, critical of both Andonovski’s tactics and Rapinoe’s reaction after missing her penalty attempt. She laughed, explaining later that she had fully expected to make it.

“Even though it didn’t end up the way we wanted, it’s a huge experience for some of these young players,” Andonovski said. “There’s a group of players that will make a mark in the future.”

Smith had two goals in the first game against Vietnam, but was held without a goal the rest of the way. She missed her penalty attempt against Sweden along with Megan Rapinoe and Kelley O’Hara.

One player, midfielder Savannah DeMelo, had never appeared in a national team match when she was named to the World Cup roster. She appeared as a substitute in a send-off match against Wales in San Jose, before starting in the first two World Cup games.

The changes were part of a U.S. youth movement. Andonovski looked for players to develop like Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman.

“I didn’t come into the locker room with the mindset of trying to save my job, I came in with the mentality that I just had to work hard and do my job,” Andonovski said on Sunday. I was focused on doing a good job, doing my job in the right way to prepare the team for the challenges in front of them, and to prepare them to represent our country.

The Americans won the World Cup in 2015 and ’19 under Andonovski’s leadership. He has gone 515-5 with the team.

After a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics and now the early exit from the World Cup, coach Vlatko Andonovski’s future with the team is uncertain as it prepares for the next big tournament, the Paris Games next year.

“It says a lot about the growth of the game,” said defenders Crystal Dunn. “I think so many people are looking for us to win games 5-0, and World Cups.

The US has fallen behind in women’s soccer. The United States, Germany and Brazil are just some of the powerhouse teams that were sent home early.

The 1999 World Cup, where the US team went 2-2 in a shootout, helped to propel the U.S. team to its current prominence. The American players didff their jerseys in celebration after defeating China on penalties in front of a sellout crowd at the Rose Bowl.
