National Treasure won the second jewel of the Triple Crown
Injured jockey Havnall-Saez of a Kentucky Derby horse and an outrider with a catastrophic ankle injury
An outrider intercepts Havnameltdown after the horse lost its jockey and suffered a catastrophic leg injury during an early race at the Pimlico Race Course on Saturday.
Baffert was suspended after Medina Spirit failed a drug test after winning the 2021 Kentucky Derby. Medina Spirit was allowed to run in the Preakness that year but finished a well-beaten third. The colt died in December, maybe from a heart attack, according to veterinarians.
There have been seven horses who died at the Kentucky Derby in the weeks leading up to the race.
The American Association of equine Practitioners vet, Scott Hay told TVG that Haggidoltdown had a serious injury to his ankle after he went bad. “It was to such an extent that it was basically impossible to transport him and they had to euthanize him humanely on the grounds immediately.”
Saez was transported to Sinai Hospital in Baltimore for further evaluation after complaining of leg pain. He was stable and conscious, according the company.

The colt, a 3-year-old, had won four of his six starts and more than $700,000 in purse money. In February, he finished second in the Saudi Derby in Saudi Arabia.
Baffert said that they never had an issue with him. We are so careful with these horses that it can happen. It is something that is disheartening. I feel bad for that horse. and I just hope Luis is OK.”
The deaths of seven people at the Kentucky Derby led to officials taking a cautious approach to pre-race exams. The second choice in the morning line was scratched from the race because of an injured hind ankle.
There was extra scrutiny on every horse competing over the weekend. Before a horse can run, there are two things that need to be done, one from the trainer’s private vet and the other from the regulatory vet in the state where the horse was stabled.
National Treasure was listed as the second betting choice behind Mage for Saturday’s race at the Baltimore track, which was where he won the Kentucky Derby. But in the end, Blazing Sevens came in second by a narrow margin and Mage took third.
