It is not cheap when it comes to the tech company’s new foldable device, the Pixel Fold
The Google Pixel Fold: A smartphone with an angle-of-moving 180 degree of movement and a lower aspect ratio of the outer screen
The inner screen is made of ultra-thin glass with a plastic layer, and the outer screen is made of Gorilla Glass. The hinge holds it all together and offers 180 degrees of movement. Since it was tested by folding it 200,000 times, it has no issues. You can position the hinge in a variety of different angles, and thanks to the flat sides, the Pixel Fold can stay upright by itself. This enables a few tricks, like propping the phone up to take a photo with the primary camera on the rear, while using the front screen as a viewfinder. No tripod needed!
The design of the Pixel Fold is similar to that of the other flagships, but it adds more features and has two screens, making it different from the others. It actually starts much smaller than other Pixel phones, with a 5.8-inch outer display and opens to a bigger 7.6 inches. And what’s particularly interesting about the Pixel Fold compared to Samsung’s offering is that it has a wider aspect ratio, so the outer screen doesn’t feel so tall and narrow. The security of positioning across its 180 degree of motion is what the hinges are designed for, and they allow it to be used at different angles.
Is it more manageable and pocketless than the foldable? I will need more time with the phone to be certain, but I don’t think so. When it’s next to a traditional phone, it looks big and awkward. It will be hard to fit in some pockets.
The company teased the Pixel Fold last week on its social channels, but it officially took the wraps off during the Google I/O 2023 keynote. The Fold will be available in June, with the promise that it will ship in June. Google is also tossing in a free Pixel Watch with every purchase. There is everything you need to know about the Pixel Fold.
The Pixel 7A costs $499 and is available today, while the Pixel Fold runs a whopping $1,799 and is due out in June. Here’s what you need to know and where you can order / preorder them.
In the past, the usual highlight of a Pixel A-series phone was a camera that matched the quality of the higher-end models. The 5A camera was kept in place by keeping the same Tensor processor used in the other two devices. The 7A gets both worlds by using the same chip in thePixel 7 and 7 Pro and also adding a 64-bit main camera and 13-bit ultrawide, which gives it the best of both worlds. The main camera actually packs more resolution than the Pixel 7, but it’s on a smaller-size sensor.
Now, as for other key specs, two of the biggest deciding factors for most people buying a new phone are the cameras and battery life. While camera performance is something that goes well beyond specs, there’s no denying that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has a much larger main sensor — which usually means better low-light performance. But, in terms of battery life, the Pixel Fold has a larger, 4,821mAh capacity. Of course, if software optimization isn’t up to snuff, it may not be as big of an advantage as it seems.
