Where Has the Justice Come From? A New York City Council Member who lost her son, J. D. Holden, in Charge of a “Semite Crime”
The chairman was very explicit in his sympathy for the victims of violent crimes that were brought to testify in front of the committee and among them was a woman who lost her son in Upper Manhattan. If most of this wasn’t happening before lunchtime, they might have lent themselves to a drinking game. Still, is the vibe of the city more lawless than it has ever been? It did feel more lawless, said the only elected official of local government asked to testify, Robert F. Holden, a Democrat and a City Council member representing a district in Queens. His wife, who is Asian American, was afraid to take the subway, fearful of hate crime. She is justified in her concern. Although hate crimes have fallen 40 percent citywide compared with the same period last year, in Queens, where Mr. Bragg has no jurisdiction, they have gone up.
A Republican congresswoman from Staten Island showed up to observe a hearing and offer to speak to the reporters that were present. One in every 67 New Yorkers was a victim of crime according to her claim in the overflow room. When asked whether this hearing would have been conducted had there been no Trump indictment, Ms. Malliotakis insisted it would have adding that, “This is an issue I have been pushing.”
