Tiger Woods made the cut at The Masters
The 36th Masters final score and the fate of Woods after he missed out on the first day of the tournament he played at Augusta
After a tough day at The Masters, it was decided in the morning that Woods would make the cut and go to the third and fourth rounds.
The 47-year-old, who had earlier suggested that this may be his last appearance at the tournament, finished his delayed second round with a one-over 73.
The champion missed the cut after going through a round of 9 bogeys, 2 double bogeys and a 4 on the back nine.
When the bad weather forced the suspension of play on Saturday, Woods was two-over par and on his way to missing the projected cut.
After the completion of the second round on Friday, the leader was at 13 under, though Jon Rahm cut his lead in half.
The third round has already begun. Woods is set to tee off at 1.06 p.m E.T and playing so many holes on the same day – if the weather holds out – will be a real test for the 15-time major champion.
After his first round at the Augusta course on Thursday, he said he was in constant pain because of the leg injuries he suffered in a car crash.
Several players were allowed to finish their second rounds after play got underway an hour earlier, due to bad weather that caused three tall pine trees to fall near spectators. No one was injured according to tournament organizers.
After six holes, the American leader was four strokes clear of his nearest challenger, while the amateur and the Spaniard made it through the rest of the round. The Spaniard began the round well, making a two at the second hole, but proceeded to bogey the next two holes to finish at one-over.
The 22-year-old US amateur champion fought back with four straight pars and was left seven shots back of the leader.
With 12 holes remaining for the lead group, it looks set to be a grueling day of Sunday action if The Masters is to avoid just the sixth Monday finish in the major’s history.
Aside from Koepka, Patrick Cantlay and Matt Fitzpatrick returned to the clubhouse as the winners of the day. As scores tumbled around them, the duo shot a round-best three-under par to move into the quartet tied for fourth, world No. 4 Cantlay making it through 13 holes while reigning US Open champion Fitzpatrick managed 11.
Tiger Woods will not resume his third round at Augusta National Sunday after the five-time Masters champion withdrew from the tournament because of a foot injury.
Posting on Twitter, Woods said: “I am disappointed to have to WD this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis. To the fans and to The Masters, I want to say thank you. Good luck to the players today!
The golf great had endured an awful start to his third round and the sound of the klaxon, which brought the third day of The Masters to an early end Saturday, may have been music to his ears.
The 15-time major winner has only played competitively once this season and in the build up to the tournament told reporters that he doesn’t play or practice much anymore.
The question of whether Woods will play again at the event will now be posed after he admitted last week that he was in pain during the first round and said that this could be his last appearance.
Neither the conditions nor his form improved much after that. Another bogey on the 14th and double bogeys on the 15th and 16th left the 47-year-old bottom of the leaderboard with the worst score of the day.
He didn’t have time to savor making the cut at Augusta for the 23rd time, starting his third round after finishing the second.
