The documents show the amount of espionage by the U.S. and Russia
Maps of Ukraine, Warfare and CP Violation, and a Top Secret Survey of the Ukrainian Conflict as of 1 March
The documents include maps of Ukraine and charts on where troops are concentrated and what kinds of weapons are available to them. The online posts show photos of physical documents that were folded and creased in some instances.
One is labeled “Top Secret,” and is titled “Status of the Conflict as of 1 March.” It gives a detailed battlefield summary on that particular day, though it’s not clear why the documents are emerging now, more than a month after they were prepared.
For example, one chart puts the Ukrainian death toll at around 71,000, a figure that is considered plausible. The chart shows the Russian deaths at 16,000 to 17,500. The Russian count is believed to be much larger than the casualty figures show.
Most analysts think the Ukrainians will focus on areas that are controlled by Russian troops in southeastern Ukraine, in a planned offensive this spring.
The Pentagon is Trying to Shut Down Russian Intelligence Towards Strategic Planification in the Ukraine War: The Case for a Top Secret
The motives of those who published the documents are not known. Putting the documents online alerted the Pentagon that they had been leaked or stolen, which might not have been otherwise known.
The U.S. was concerned that Russian intelligence could gain access to information it was giving to the Ukranians. But the intelligence sharing among the U.S., NATO and Ukraine has been seen as extremely valuable in helping the smaller Ukrainian military fight off the Russians.
The leaked documents show how the U.S. gathers information on Russia, but American officials don’t know if any of their information will be cut off by the leak. The new documents appear to show that America has an extensive understanding of Russian planning, even though American officials have conceded that they have lost some sources of information.
The goal was to persuade the international community that the threat of a Russian attack was real. CIA Director William Burns has made multiple visits to Ukranian and spoke about the intelligence sharing between the two countries.
The Russian military has made progress in their campaign in eastern Ukraine, but the heavy fighting has claimed thousands of lives on both sides.
According to a senior Ukrainian security official, no more than five people in the world know when the counteroffensive will begin.
But the leak has the potential to do real damage to Ukraine’s war effort by exposing which Russian agencies the United States knows the most about, giving Moscow a potential opportunity to cut off the sources of information.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation launched an inquiry on Friday to find the source of the leak. The documents appear to be legitimate intelligence and operational briefs that the Pentagon has compiled, but one has been changed at some point, according to the officials.
The Justice Department and the Pentagon are trying to determine how secret military documents on the war in Ukraine got onto multiple social media sites.
Some documents, including some marked “top secret,” were found on the internet. More classified documents have been posted on additional sites as early as March 1. There are questions about how much damage this could cause and how widespread it would be.
The motive for posting the material online is not certain, because government intelligence agencies around the world want to hide their secrets rather than reveal them.
Some are dated to late February or early March and appear to be part of a slide deck produced daily for top U.S. military and other national security officials.
