After anger, the office of Biden says the White House invitation is for the LSU women’s team
A Tweet from the First Lady: “Comment on Angeline’s Reese and the Tigers at the White House” (A PRESSOR FOR THE FIRST PRESIDENT)
The first lady walked back her dual invitation after getting backlash on television and on social media. A particularly strong objection came from LSU star player Angel Reese, who called the dual invite “A JOKE” in a tweet.
Biden praised the teams for their performance during an event on Monday in Colorado State Capitol in Denver.
Runner ups don’t usually go to the White House. I think LSU deserves to go there, and I think they should enjoy that moment. I’m not sure if I could go to the White House on different terms. That is for LSU. They should be very happy to be a champion for a second.
The press secretary for the first lady wanted to clarify Biden’s comments that they were meant to applaud the historic game and all women athletes. She looks forward to celebrating the LSU Tigers on their championship win at the White House.”
The 20-year-old Reese played a key role in the Tigers’ 102-85 victory over the Hawkeyes to win the first national title in program history on Sunday. She was the Most Outstanding Player in the women’s NCAA tournament.
Before Valdivia’s clarification, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith had echoed Reese’s sentiment, replying to her tweet saying: “I mean absolutely zero disrespect to the First Lady, but you are 1000% correct.
LSU star Angelee Reese and the first lady’s comments on the dual White House invitation after Sunday’s basketball championship
Sunday’s national championship drew a record-breaking average of 9.9 million viewers, according to sports broadcaster ESPN. The game, which peaked at 12.6 million viewers, was the most-viewed NCAA Division I women’s college basketball game on record across all networks.
Reese has been in the headlines following LSU’s victory, in particular as she called out the double standard in the reaction to her gesture towards Iowa guard Caitlin Clark.
Reese made a hand gesture similar to one used by wrestler John Cena, called “You Can’t See Me”, during Sunday’s tournament game.
In the press conference after the victory, Reese referenced the difference in reaction she received as a result of her gesture as compared to the one Clark received.
I was critiqued for who I was throughout the year. Reese said that he doesn’t fit the narrative. I am not in the box that you would want me to be in. I look like a hood. I’m too ghetto. Y’all told me that all year. Y’all don’t say nothing when other people do it.
“So this is for the girls that look like me. It is for those who believe in what they believe in. It is unapologetically you. I did it for tonight. It was bigger than me tonight. They will go into a rage every time.
News of the first lady’s comments on the dual White House invitation came on the heels of a viral moment between Reese and Iowa Hawkeyes guard Caitlin Clark.
LSU star Angel Reese says that neither she, nor her team, would be visiting the White House after the Tigers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes 102-85 to win their first basketball national championship.
Reese responded to Bidens comments saying they were a Joke and in a reply to an post from “The Shade Room” that had a comment from Reese. It was a period.
