The Washington Post reported on new evidence in the Mar-a-Lago case
Interpreting the Investigative Activity Against Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago by the DOJ and the Defense Lawyer Evan Corcoran
The Justice Department has been investigating potential mishandling of national security records and possible obstruction for about a year. During a search of Mar-a-Lago, FBI agents recovered more than 100 classified documents. Since then, Trump’s legal team has turned over additional classified material.
The investigation by the special counsel focused on how Donald Trump handled classified information around Mar-a-Lago resort and those who may have witnessed him, according to multiple sources.
The former president’s team returned some classified documents after a subpoena in May, but the FBI’s August search turned up more that hadn’t been returned.
The Washington Post reported that additional evidence shows that Trump instructed others to lie about his time in the White House when they tried to recover documents.
Molly Michael, Trump’s assistant, has been collected by investigators who have obtained her text and handwritten notes which detail what Trump was up to on a daily basis.
The recent investigative activity before a federal grand jury in DC also includes subpoenaing witnesses who previously spoke to investigators, according to sources. While the FBI interviewed many aides and workers at Mar-a-Lago nearly a year ago voluntarily, grand jury appearances are transcribed and under-oath – an indication the prosecutors are locking in witness testimony.
The staffers are of interest to investigators because of what they may have seen or heard while carrying out their daily duties around the estate, including whether they saw boxes or documents in Trump’s office suite or elsewhere.
The Post said that officials involved in the investigation wanted to know if Trump showed any interest in documents relating to Gen. Mark Milley.
The new evidence the team working for special counsel Jack Smith is focusing on is separate from what was obtained through a recent grand jury pursuit of Trump’s defense lawyer Evan Corcoran, a source told CNN. The DOJ believes that the disgraced president used his lawyer to try and advance a crime and that Corcoran spoke with him on the day the Trump Organization received a subpoena.
A spokesman for Trump, Steven Cheung, accused the Justice Department of leaking information and malpractice in regards to the investigation.
