Oscar Pistorius’ parents don’t like early release
Oscar Pistorius, who was a paralympian athlete at the London Olympics, has been in jail for five years and a half of his life
South Africa has a parole board that is considering early release submissions for disgraced Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who was jailed for shooting dead his girlfriend.
June Steenkamp, the mother of Reeva Steenkamp, attended Pistorius’ hearing Friday to oppose his parole. They have said they don’t believe his account of the killing of their daughter.
The former olympic sprinter shot his partner four times through the bathroom door in his house, denying that he killed her in a fit of anger and saying he had mistaken her for an invader.
Inmates can be considered for parole after serving half of their sentence if they meet certain conditions.
In 2018, the athlete’s father Henke Pistorius told the UK’s Times newspaper that he ran bible classes and prayer groups for prisoners, including the jail’s most feared gang leader.
The trial that was followed around the globe was centered on the athlete who competed in the 2012 London Olympics.
Prosecutors claimed that the sentence was too light. The Supreme Court of Appeal in South Africa increased the sentence of Pistorius to 13 years and five months.
