She tells NBC in the first interview since the shooting that she can’t forget the look on the student’s face
A 911 Call from Khloie, Miah, and the Officers Who Killed a Teacher in Uvalde, Texas
When the police went to the school after receiving the report of the shooting, they heard shots on the second floor. Two officers opened fire when they saw the attacker shooting, killing him in a second floorlobby area. The school does not have a police officer guarding it, he said.
CNN obtained the audio of the 18-minute 911 call from a source and is using it with the approval of the parents of Khloie and Miah. It’s the call that should have ended any doubt or hesitation that the teenage gunman was active, roaming between the two connected classrooms, that children were trapped, injured and needed to be saved.
The officers who were at the scene should hear this audio so they can understand what the kids are going through.
The injured friends and teachers were only a few feet away from the other 372 officers from 23 agencies that were responding. At least one child and one teacher survived the initial attack but died later.
Miah’s parents reached out to CNN after we ran a story Tuesday on Miah’s classmate Khloie calling 911 and giving details of the dead and injured in Classroom 112 some 40 minutes before officers finally burst into the room to stop the gunman and get victims out.
The responding officers were shown that they were really cowardice if the children called and said that they were hurt in the classroom.
The response on May 24 has been termed a failure for months. Texas’s top cop did not provide an update at a public meeting last week due to the fact that full details of what happened are still being kept secret. Instead, Col. Steve McCraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, listened to family members’ anger and acknowledged some mistakes, before saying his officers “did not fail the community” of Uvalde.
After hearing the emergency call, Ruben Torres contrasted the actions of Khloie’s mother with that of the officers who did not respond. He said that his daughter’s feats were remarkable that day. He said none of the adults had courage that day.
The call on Wednesday was the first time that Miah’s parents had ever heard it, and they were able to understand more of what Miah had told them about that day.
“Hi, can you please send help?” Miah asked at 12:14pm, 46 minutes after the shooter was seen in the room but still more than 30 minutes from when he was stopped.
“Are they in the building?” She inquires about law enforcement responses. Miah thought that officers were trying to find a way to get close to her, but her mother said that they were already on the other side of the door.
Last month, she found a body camera video that was online that showed the distraction, delay and lack of communication, and she was able to learn more from it.
Miah toldCNN how she played dead and smeared blood on herself to make sure the guy wouldn’t come back and take her life. She even testified to the US Congress, sending a video message to a House committee investigating gun violence when she said what she wished for was “to have security.”
Her mother remembered how Miah used to love playing prank on her siblings and was now afraid of loud noise.
The gun violence archive of the United states: Five years after the Florida high school shooting, firearms are protected in the bipartisan safer communities act
Five years after a mass shooting at a Florida high school left 17 dead, there are still mass shootings in the US, including one Monday that left three people dead and five wounded at Michigan State University.
Cruz was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A school resource officer is accused of not confronting the suspect at the school.
Some teachers in some states may be allowed to be armed as part of the new law that was adopted after the deadly shooting at a high school in Florida.
There is no consensus on what constitutes a mass shooting, it’s up to individual groups. A mass shooting is defined by the Gun Violence Archive as one in which at least four people are killed or injured. 130 mass shootings have taken place in the United States in the next seven years, according to the archive.
After years of failed attempts to pass federal legislation, the Texas tragedy led to the first major federal gun safety law in decades. It marked the most significant gun legislation since the assault weapons ban of 1994, which expired after 10 years.
The new law supports so-called red flag laws, which allow courts to temporarily seize firearms from anyone believed to be a danger to themselves or others. The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act also provides funding for school safety and state crisis intervention programs.
Lori Alhadeff, Alyssa’s Mom, and Park Land School Shooting 5-Year-Anniversary
Lori Alhadeff, Alyssa’s mother, told HLN she dropped her daughter off at school Wednesday and said, “I love you.” When the mother heard about the shooting, she rushed to the school. But it was too late.
“Alyssa was a beautiful, smart, talented, successful, awesome, amazing soccer player. You will be greatly missed,Alyssa. We love you so much. You are always a part of our hearts.
The camp offered their sympathies and prayers for her family and friends on their Facebook page. It is for a blessing to remember the memory of Alyssa.
“Mr. Beigel was my hero and he still will forever be my hero. She told CNN that she will always remember the actions he took for her and other students. “I am alive today because of him.”
He was a very funny kid, outgoing, and sometimes quiet. He was loved by all of his family. He was my baby brother most of the time, wrote Miguel in a letter created to help pay for funeral expenses after the shooting.

After the Indianapolis School Shooting, Nick Guttenberg, 44, died after a shooting encounter with a young man at home in South Carolina
Nickscribbled a note on his bed that said he wanted to become a Swedish Olympian and go to Tokyo 2020 to compete for his country. “I will give all I have in my body and my mind to achieve the goals I have set.”
After the shooting, Robert L. Manuel, then-president of the University of Indianapolis, said Nick’s death was “a reminder that we are connected to the larger world, and when tragedy hits in places around the world, it oftentimes affects us at home.”
Feis, an assistant football coach, was killed after he threw himself in front of students to protect them from oncoming bullets, football program spokesperson Denis Lehtio said after the shooting.
He kept everyone else’s needs met before his own. He worked hard. He worked after school on the weekends mowing grass and helping other people.
“My heart is broken,” her father, Fred Guttenberg, posted on Facebook after the massacre. “Jennifer Bloom Guttenberg and I lost our baby girl to a violent shooting at her school. We lost our daughter and my son Jesse Guttenberg lost his sister.”
“I am broken as I write this trying to figure out how my family gets through this,” the father continued. “We appreciate all of the calls and messages and we apologize for not reacting to everyone individually … Hugs to all and hold your children tight.”
Eddie and Janice were in South Carolina where they heard about the massacre from TV reports.
The day went by without us hearing anything about him. We kept hoping they would find him, because we were so afraid he would wander off in shock.
I didn’t like this by 7 o’clock. Her husband said that this was not good. The police called us at 1 a.m. to tell us that he had been killed.
The deadly rampage seemed to be inexplicable. “He was a good kid. He … never got in trouble,” Janice Stroud said. He was the last of my daughter’s children who lived at home.
Isabel Dalu, a close friend of Cara’s family, testified last year during the gunman’s trial about all the things the 14-year-old was looking forward to before she was gunned down:
Cara had also recently started Irish dancing again, and she was excited to dance in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. The family had planned a trip to Ireland for that summer to visit family.
She dreamt of her first date and kiss, as well as falling in love. Isabel said that Cara dreamed of graduating high up in the class and having all of her loved ones watch.

What Do We Know About Meadow Pollack? A Memorino for a Wonderful Girl, and What Will She Do When You Go to School?
Her death made an impact on Winter Guard International. “No student should ever go to school afraid,” the group said.
He was known to friends at the school as Guac, and he had an account on the photo-sharing site. The paper said his interests were football, basketball, urban graffiti, and hip-hop.
A message to his girlfriend was the last social media post by the teen before he died.
“While we will not have the opportunity to watch her grow up and become the amazing woman we know she would become, we are keeping an eternal perspective,” her family said.
Meadow was a young woman, who had lots of energy. She was going to be joining our community in the fall, and we were looking forward to it.
“Please say a prayer for the family of an amazing girl I got to call my best friend growing up Meadow Pollack … her life was taken way too soon and I have no words to describe how this feels,” Lovito wrote on facebook.
“Helena, we miss you dearly and are so incredibly sorry that your life was cut short. You were not deserving of this. We love you so much and will miss you greatly.”
“She was deeply loved and loved others even more so. Though she was some what reserved, she had a relentless motivation towards her academic studies, and her soft warm demeanor brought the best out in all who knew her. I’m not sure if she is still around, but she was brilliant and witty, and I have doubts that she is gone.

A close friend of a teacher shot and killed by a student in her Virginia classroom told NBC she had been scared of her boyfriend, Peter, for six years
The scholarship is being created to help other students enjoy music as well as fund increased security at schools in an effort to continue his memory. Please help keep Alex’s spirit alive,” the page said. “The money raised will be sent to the Stoneman Douglas Marching Eagles.”
“Unfortunately, the letter arrived in the mail the day after she passed, so she never knew that,” Stoneman Douglas student Ariana Ortega told Florida lawmakers after the shooting.
According to his close friend, Peter was shot while holding a door open to let other students get to safety. After the shooting, thousands of people signed a White House petition asking for the JROTC member to be buried with military honors.
The two of them shared a class together, and when she saw images of those who had died, she began screaming and crying.
“It’s hard to not have him in the hallways anymore because me and him used to laugh with each other,” she said. “He used to make me smile. He is gone now.
The first-grade teacher allegedly shot by a 6-year-old student in her Virginia classroom can’t forget the look on the student’s face as he aimed the gun at her and moments later “thought I had died,” she told NBC in her first interview since the January incident.
The shooter, who the police identified as Audrey E. Hale, had entered the building by firing through a side door, armed with two assault-style weapons and a handgun, according to John Drake, the chief of the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, and went to the second floor, firing shots before being killed by the police. Chief Drake said that the assailant was “at one point a student” at the school.
Zwerner knew, she said, she had been shot – the bullet went through her left hand before getting lodged in her chest, where fragments of it remain – but her first thought was of the safety of her other students.
“I was terrified,” she said. My first thought was to tell your kids to get out of here. This is not a safe classroom. I wanted to get my babies out of there.
Indeed, Zwerner – who NBC reported could not get into details about what occurred prior to the shooting due to the potential litigation – is dealing not only with physical injuries, but emotional ones, too.
The boy who allegedly shot Zwerner will not be criminally charged, according to the Commonwealth’s Attorney.
The family of the boy who had a disability said that he was alone on the day of the shooting, despite being required to attend school with his parent. “We will regret our absence on this day for the rest of our lives,” the statement read.
A teen who shot and killed an assistant principal at a Newport News school for allegedly shooting a student on a cell phone: Bethe Ansatz
She told NBC that some days she can’t get out of bed. On some days I can get out of bed and make it to my appointments. I try to stay positive from what I have gone through.
Sometimes it is hard to comprehend the support from her family and complete strangers, but it is appreciated and inspiring.
Two days before the shooting, the student allegedly “slammed” and broke Zwerner’s cell phone and cursed at guidance counselors, which led to him being suspended for one day, according to a legal notice sent to the Newport News School Board by Zwerner’s attorney that also informed officials about the teacher’s plan to sue school administrators.
The fallout from the incident was swift, drawing harsh criticism from parents and leading the school board to vote to oust Superintendent George Parker III. Two weeks after the shooting, the assistant principal resigned and the principle was relocated, though the district did not say where.
“The fact of the matter is that those who were aware that the student may have had a gun on the premises that day did not report this to Mrs. Newton at all,” Branch said.
The Newport News prosecutor is keeping a close eye on this case to see if they charge anyone.
In order to hold those accountable, Toscano said he is going to do that. She is going to have to deal with this for the rest of her life.
She said that the vivid memories of that day are still fresh in her mind, but that the shock will never go away. “I think about it daily. Sometimes I have nightmares.”
The Nashville Shooting of a High School: The Case for a Transgender Shooter and the Pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Dallas
A video released by Metro Nashville Police shows the moment a shooter entered the school and shot through some glass doors. The suspect in the video is walking through the hallways holding an assault style weapon.
Police have referred to Hale as the “female shooter” and at an evening press conference added that Hale was transgender. When asked for clarification, a spokesperson told CNN Hale used “male pronouns” on a social media profile.
Officials said that they had determined that the shooter lived in the Nashville area and that Hale’s father had been interviewed. Investigators were expected to spend Tuesday processing the scene and gathering more details about what happened during the roughly 14 minutes of terror at the elementary school.
The police chief said he was moved to tears to see the kids being ushered out of the building.
The victims in the Nashville shooting were named as Evelyn Dieckhaus, 9, Hallie Scruggs and William Kinney, all 9, Cynthia Peak, 61, a substitute teacher, and Mike Hill, 61, a custodian. The school website states Dr. Koonce was the head of school. A biography of the pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Dallas is online, and it shows that the pastor’s daughter was Hallie. Covenant Presbyterian is connected to the elementary school.
Shaundelle Brooks, who lost her son Akilah DaSilva during a 2018 mass shooting at a Nashville-area Waffle House, said she was brought back to that painful moment as her other son was placed on lockdown at a nearby school Monday.
The Jacksonville, Fla., active shooter killed in the early hours of the morning of December 11th, 2012 during a neighborhood confrontation with a neighbor
The shooter was “someone that had multiple rounds of ammunition, prepared for confrontation with law enforcement, prepared to do more harm than was actually done,” the police chief said in a news conference.
Drake said police think Hale obtained at least two of the weapons legally after they found three weapons, including an assault rifle, pistol and a handgun. A sawed-off shotgun, a second shotgun and other evidence were seized when a search warrant was executed at Hale’s home.
In the middle of the school day, a man with a gun opened fire in the Covenant School, which is located in the affluent Green Hills neighborhood.
The police went upstairs and confronted the person who was firing at cars from a window. The shooter was killed by the two officers at 10:27 a.m., Don said.
“I was hoping this day would never ever come here in the city. Drake said in a Monday news conference that they will not wait to make entry and stop the threat to our children.
“This school prepared for this with active shooter training for a reason. It is something that we don’t want to think about. But experience has taught us that we need to be prepared because in this day and time it is the reality of where we are,” Nashville Metropolitan Councilman Russ Pulley told CNN.
Pastor Mike Hill: Prayers for the Covenant School and Stone Church in Green Hills, Nashville, after the September 11, 2001 Shooting at the Center for Science and Technology
She attended Vanderbilt University and Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville and got her master’s degree from Georgia State University, the school said.
The staff section of the church’s website is offline after Mike Hill was identified. He worked as a facilities/ kitchen staff. A friend of Mike Hill confirmed his image to CNN. Hill, 61, was a custodian at the school, per police.
We are praying for the Covenant School, as well as Michael who was beloved by the faculty and students, and filled him with joy for 14 years.
The shooting shattered the wealthy enclave of Green Hills, a few miles south of downtown Nashville, where the small school and stone church sit atop a hill, nestled in a residential neighborhood filled with stately homes and lush landscaping. Founded in 2001 as a ministry of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, the Covenant School bills itself as “intentionally small” with about 200 students, according to its website, and a teacher-to-student ratio of 8 to 1. Tuition costs around $16,000 per year.
John Cooper, Mayor of Nashville, said that he is overwhelmed at the thought of the future lost by these children and their families.
The Nashville shooting as a family’s worst nightmare: President Biden’s defense campaign for gun-control legislation, and the nature of the attacker
According to a recent study published in the journalJAMA pediatrics, homicide is a leading cause of death for children in the US and the overall rate has increased over the last ten years.
Calling the Nashville shooting “sick” and “a family’s worst nightmare,” President Biden again pushed Congress on Monday to enact gun-control legislation. In the case of the shooting at the dance studio in Monterey Park, he advocated for a ban on assault weapons.
Wearing camouflage pants, a black vest and a backward red baseball cap, the assailant walks through rooms and hallways with a weapon drawn. In one instance, the shooter walked in and out of the church office and down a hallway past the children’s ministry, as a fire alarm went off.
There was a lot of confusion after the attack as to the nature of the attacker. Chief Drake said the shooter identified as transgender. In recent months the shooter identified as a male on social media, but officials referred to him as “she” and “her”.
Chief Drake said it was too early to discuss a possible motive for the shooting, though he confirmed that the attack was targeted. The authorities were talking to the father of the shooter, Chief Drake said.
“We have a map drawn out of how this was all going to take place,” he said. We could talk about it later, but we’re not certain, so we’ll put that out as soon as we can.
When the sky gets too hot, the kids are going to school, so what do they do? A conference call from the Nashville Fire Department on Monday morning
Sirens and the buzz of helicopters pierced the still of a sunny spring morning on Monday, sending residents of the area out of their homes to wait for news about the shooting or assurances that their children at neighboring schools had been released from lockdown. A few women shook their heads and gasped while watching the news conference.
Lisa DeBusk, a 43 year old resident of Green Hills, said it is terrifying to see parents running up the hill. She said she had considered sending her daughter to Covenant, calling it “the sweetest, most wonderful place.”
A total of 98 people were taken to the nearby Woodmont Baptist Church after the shooting, according to a spokeswoman for the Nashville Fire Department.
A group of children wearing red and black polo shirts, plaid skirts, khaki shorts and pants walked into a conference-like room inside a church with their hands together. Elsewhere in the building, parents waited to learn if their children were safe.
Rachael Anne Elrod, the Metro Nashville School Board chair, said she was inside “the worst waiting room you can imagine” as officials set about reuniting children with their parents. She said that some people were debating how to manage the day after a traumatic morning.
“They are mostly figuring out how they are going to talk to their children going forward about this,” Ms. Elrod said. What is the next best step? What should they do next? Are we going to get ice cream with them? Should they take them to the playground? Do we inquire as to what they saw? Do we not ask them what they saw? Are they going to school tomorrow? Is there school tomorrow?”
Rachel Dibble’s children go to a different private school and she visited Covenant families that she knew through sports.
“It has to stop,” Ms. Dibble said of school shootings. A politician is going to sit down in a church and see a lot of people, including families and 250 kids, that are all trembling and gray and yellow and green and blue.
Speaking of the students, she added: “They started this morning, they had their cute little uniforms on, they probably had some Froot Loops. Their whole lives changed today.”
Dr. Koonce of Woodmont Baptist, Tenn., 1972-2014, Prov. J. P. Trevathan, 81
There are far more public schools in the US compared to private schools, which is what has led to many of the high-profile school shootings in recent years.
After spending time in Woodmont Baptist, Melissa Trevathan, the owner of a counseling ministry, grieved the loss of Dr. Koonce, whom she said she had gotten to know through her work with children. Ms. Trevathan, who had come with Pippa, a therapy dog in training, to offer support, characterized Dr. Koonce “very magnetic” and strong, and recalled her passion for education, sense of humor and love for adventure.
Emily Cochrane reported from Nashville. Jamie McGee contributed reporting from Nashville. Reporting was contributed by several people, including Sarah Mervosh, Emily Schmall, Daniel Victor, Ruth Graham and Victoria Kim. Kirsten Noyes , Susan C. Beachy and Kitty Bennett contributed research.
Police said Evelyn was 9. While her family appreciates all the support they’ve received, they are looking for some time as they grieve according to a statement obtained by KMOV.
The staff member loved to cook and spend time with his family, according to a family statement obtained by CNN. There were 14 grandchildren for him.
Cherish Your Dreams, Omit Yours, and Remember Your Missing. A video message from the Reverend Dene Koonce
They said the educator had a great sense of humor and was confident. Koonce made people feel important by interacting with them, Kim Lee said.
She could be speaking with a preschool student, then turn around and meet with the teacher that is having a bad day, while she could be talking to a board member.
“There will be a time to talk about the legislation and budget proposals we’ve brought forward this year. And clearly, there’s more work to do,” he said Tuesday night.
In the midst of great tragedy, there is hope that God will redeem. What is meant for evil can be turned into good. In the coming days, we grieve, but not without hope. May we also act with wisdom, discernment, and grace. Lee recorded a video message in which he promised to love those who have lost.

A Post by Chad Scruggs about a close friend of his wife, Cindy, and their daughter, Mae Ann, in Dallas, April 9, 2005
In a posting on his Facebook page Tuesday, he wrote that Cindy was the closest of friends he had as a child. When she was a child, she and Mae Ann had birthdays the same day, her family lived across the street from us. Cindy and Mae were close to each other.
Hallie was 9, police said, and the daughter of Covenant Presbyterian Church Lead Pastor Chad Scruggs, according to a statement by Park Cities Presbyterian Church in Dallas, a sister church Scruggs formerly served.
