They got out of jail using a toothbrush and were arrested at an IHOP
An escape story of Garza and Nemo: two men found in Newport News, Virginia, and charged with crimes against a juvenile in the early September 1990s
Two men managed to crawl and climb their way out of a Virginia jail on Monday, but their escape was cut short when police arrested them at a nearby IHOP the next morning.
New charges are pending against the two men after they were arrested in Newport News about one hour north of Virginia Beach.
The sheriff’s office said that the men used a toothbrush and metal object to build their tools.
“I’m thankful for the citizens who observed Garza and Nemo at the IHOP and notified law enforcement. It is something we always say, Sheriff Gabriel Morgan said in the news release.
A criminal and internal investigation is underway by the sheriff’s office to “minimize the chances of such an event happening again,” the release says.
Since December, he had been jailed on multiple charges, including contempt of court, violation of parole, and failure to appear. In October, he had been charged with a variety of crimes including credit card fraud, forgery, possession of burglaries tools and contempt of court.
They had been at the jail annex for months, facing a lot of different charges.
Two men escape from a jail facility in Newport News, Calif., after the manshadro incident on Monday afternoon and have not been seen since
In a Tuesday Facebook Live video, Chief Steve Drew said that he didn’t think there was any threat to the public after their arrest.
“I don’t think that we were dealing with, like, menacing individuals,” Drew said. Two people managed to escape from a jail facility.
The men went missing during a scheduled headcount on Monday, but were back by Monday afternoon. They weren’t in their cell in the facility, as it turned out.
The Newport News facility management and engineering team comprised of NNSO personnel and city facilities engineers are reviewing and formulating ways to mitigate the facility weakness based on this incident.
Authorities alerted the public to the escape on Monday evening, sharing mugshots and urging people to be on the lookout for two men wearing white thermal sweatsuits.
Drew explained that robust collaboration between local law enforcement agencies as well as calls from community members made the difference in allowing this thing to end quickly.
