A bill was signed to give him more control of the Disney district

The Walt Disney World Corporate Kingdom: The Reopening of Reedy Creek and Replacing Regulatory Violation in the State Legislature on Oct. 5, 2015

In press materials released with the bill signing, DeSantis’ office said the bill would also end some of Disney’s other special privileges, such as exemption from state regulatory reviews.

Lawmakers changed course after they realized that Reedy Creek debt and contracts were in violation of the law that created the tax district. The district has long-standing authority to tax, build and borrow money for projects and services around Disney’s vast footprint in orange and ogee counties. It also renames Reedy Creek as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, restricts its use of eminent domain and removes never-used powers that could have allowed Disney to build its own airport or a nuclear plant.

At a Reedy Creek fire station in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on Monday, Ron DeSantis said the corporate kingdom is over. accountability will be the order of the day, with a new sheriff in town.

The members include Michael Sasso, a local elections lawyer, and Bridget Ziegler, a conservative school board member and wife of the Florida Republican Party chairman.

In a statement to CNN after the bill passed the state legislature earlier this month, Jeff Vahle, the president of Walt Disney World Resort, said the company was “ready to work within this new framework, and we will continue to innovate, inspire and bring joy to the millions of guests who come to Florida to visit Walt Disney World each year.”

But DeSantis’ critics say the bill looks like retaliation for a growing feud between Disney and the governor, which hit a tipping point last year. Disney crossed the line by opposing the bill that restricts classroom discussion about gender identity and sexual orientation.

The company gave money to a candidate during the election. Disney was granted an exemption from a law that would have cracked down on big tech companies, according to reports.

The heart of the bill is the appointment of a five-person state board to oversee municipal services, such as fire protection and road maintenance, where Disney World operates.

Disney was still responsible for its municipal debts under the new structure, and local governments wouldn’t raise taxes, according to DeSantis on Monday.

The governor said that the five board members are people who want to see Disney be what it wants to be.

According to Amy Green, the creation of the Reedy Creek Improvement District helped Disney decide to build its theme park in the 1960s.

Disney did not respond to NPR, but they have previously told media that they wouldn’t fight the government takeover.

The relationship between the two deteriorated in the year after Disney changed its policies on preventing the spread of contagious diseases, requiring workers to show proof of vaccinations and guests to wear face coverings.

It was becoming more and more apparent that Disney’s changes to its parks and films to increase inclusivity was drawing criticism from conservatives. Disney World closed Splash Mountain because of a petition that gained over 20,000 signatures.

DeSantis immediately turned Chapek’s statement into a fundraising point. He introduced legislation that would get rid of Disney’s special tax status.

An appointee to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ new oversight board in control of Disney’s special tax district called homosexuality “evil” last year and shared a baseless conspiracy theory that tap water could be making more people gay.

The Reedy Creek Improvement District is owned by Disney, and a number of people were appointed by the governor to run it.

Why homosexuals? A discussion with Peri about homosexuality and abortion, and the fall of the Roman empire in the 2022 Zoom discussion on YouTube

Why are there homosexuals? There are any number of reasons, you know, that are given. The increase in estrogen has been said to have increased in our societies. There is an ingredient in the water that comes from birth control pills. They can’t get it out,” Peri baselessly said in a January 2022 Zoom discussion, later put on YouTube. “The level of testosterone in men broadly in America has declined by 50 points in the past 10 years. Maybe that is a part of it.

“But the big part I would suggest to you, based upon what it’s saying here, is the removal of constraint,” he continued. The society provided the constraint. And so, which is the responsibility of a society to constrain people from doing evil? Remove the constraints and there will be evil.

In one discussion, he linked homosexuality to the fall of the Roman Empire – a fringe historical belief occasionally pushed by some Christian activists.

“Homosexuality was praised,” Peri said. “LGBTQ today is being emphasized everywhere, even on children’s shows. And so ultimately the Romans had become weak.”

The discussions which focused on seeing the modern world through a Biblical viewpoint were often related to social issues. In other discussions uploaded on YouTube, Peri said that “not very long ago being a mother was the pinnacle of being a woman,” and he compared abortion to genocides like the Holocaust.

I am surprised that you have not seen a backlash from the black population for what is effectively a genocide. And if you look to the right, you can see that in world history, there have been great killers. 11 million people were killed during the Holocaust. The chart was comparing the situation of abortion to the situation of Jews.

“Don’t Say Gay” When the Disney Board voted against a Governor in the Parental Rights in Education Act, Rep. Rita Harris

There was a long-standing battle between Disney and the government over the Parental Rights in Education Act which critics called “Don’t Say Gay”. Schools can’t teach about sexual orientation and gender identity in Kindergarten through third grade classrooms and in older classrooms that don’t meet yet-to-be-defined standards.

“When you lose your way, you know, you gotta have people that are going to tell you the truth, and so we hope that they can get back on,” DeSantis said. I believe that all of the board members would like to see the types of entertainment that families can appreciate.

Does the board members have the ability to veto projects considered to go against a governor? state Rep. Rita Harris said during floor debate on the proposal. “For instance, Walt Disney just changed Splash Mountain. They made it called Tiana’s Bayou. What if the governor didn’t like it? Would the board then be able to push a company into changing their business model just so that they don’t misalign (with) them?”
